My little bunch

Gerber folding hunter, has field dressed many an animal.

Solingen folder that I bought up in British Columbia 40-some years ago. It's actually sharp enough to shave with if I'm careful.

Italian stilleto switchblade that's best for impressing your friends when cutting the end off of a nice cigar.

Leatherman. Nuff said.

The little one with the blue handle I won as a door prize at the range one day. Good for opening boxes and envelopes.

The really big ones are in the kitchen drawer and used for cooking!

I considered posting this several times. You see, the knives I listed earlier are the ones I carry, but they're not my favorite. My favorite is also the one I'm the most proud of. I have good reason to be, but I would never, ever carry this one.

Why? Because this knife was hand made by my father as a gift to his father.

Dad was a tool maker for a major steel mill, and this knife is solid steel. The handle was cast around the blade, which was made from a saw blade used to cut red hot steel billets when they came out of the furnace. It's the hardest steel I've ever seen.

But this wasn't just any saw blade. Along with a personal history, this knife is a tiny bit of world history as well. Dad didn't know it at the time, but the billets that blade cut were part of an order for the Manhattan Project.

(Sorry the pics aren't better, but I'm still trying to figure out this fancy new DSLR camera I bought last month )

Capt. Charlie--

I would never carry that one, either. That's a family heirloom and you have the history behind it. If there was ever one that should be a safe queen, that's it.

I carry two knives. The smaller one is a Spyderco-used to open letters and for cutting rope etc. The big one is a large cold steel voyager that is never used and is on standby for emergency use.

Personal blades

General field use; the Kershaw folding blade is tough to beat. Custom-sheath also holds Lakota Finwing (caping knife; fixed) for less general applications. Front of sheath holds Kershaw and "Explorer" (I think that's the model) Swiss Army knives. Rear of sheath inside-the-belt-line is the Lakota; angled to accomodate shorter sheath, as well as being more accessible than when carried in the vertical. Thus, 4.5" long sheath holds all three; with the Lakota being almost invisible.

Camillus Robo Power. These little guys are alittle expensive, like 50-60 bucks for a small 3" blade. They are freakin reliable though. Full life time warranty, free factory shapening, and damn good steel. I've had mine for about 4 years and it's still as sharp as the day I bought it.

Cold Steel Voyager Tanto. Nice and light, very tough, and a good blade. I keep a Leatherman in my vehicle for emergency work, and have several more knives for various purposes at the house.

knife

My everyday knife is a "GT" auto with a soon to be replaced non-serrated blade. My backup knife right now while the "GT" is away, is a CRKT M16-03Z.

I have a S&W knive and I strongly disagree with what you wrote, Mine has Been just fine and is sturty and the blade has held up well against some serious abuse.
Have you owned one? if so what in perticular was wrong with it?
In my opinion you cant beat the bang for the buck on they're knives.

they are usually found for 20-some dollars. they are made of cheap metal, the screws lossen up, the action become very loose, quickly. my cousin bought me one a year or so ago.. i used it at work. for various things ..opening boxes , cutting cardboard, cutting plactic zip ties..etc. The action was so loosed after 3 days it had to be tightened. and two of the frame allen screws went missing.

my point. If you are going to carry a knife for utility and or SD .. it is an bad choice. I think 60-70 is a minimum for a good knife. The Kershaw Blur has been outstanding..came very sharp too. i have used that as a prying tool more than once and it is still in great shape

TexiCali Slim,

I have not had good luck with S&W knives. I am sure there are good ones, but I did not get it, the steal was too soft to hold a good edge and the overall durability left something to be desired. OTH, I have had really good luck with Benchmade, Emerson, and Spyderco.
