King Of 2 Miles....

King of the 2 Miles shoot at Whittington a month ago.

Mitchell Fitzpatrick and his spotter Paul Phillips won KING trophy with a score of 65k. Mitchell used his impressive .375 Lethal Precision Arms LLC rifle shooting prototype solid 400gr Berger bullets. He built this rifle himself using a McMillan A5 Super Mag stock, Rock Creek barrel, Nightforce ATACR MOA scope, Phoenix Precision Bipod and a Lethal Precision Arms muzzle brake. Remarkably, Mitchell nailed first- and second-shot hits at the 2477-yard target, a full 1.4 miles away.

The performance of Mitchell Fitzpatrick’s .375 Lethal Precision Arms LLC rifle with a prototype 400 grain Berger Bullets solid was superb, (G7 BC of 0.56 at 3000 fps). ” Berger’s new prototype .375-cal 400gr projectile around 2850 [that] we have been developing gave us a monumental ballistic advantage. [It was] without a doubt, a key to our success" With any extreme shooting, it is equipment and cartridge as well as skill and this performance helped Mitch win the match.

Mitchell gave credit to his team-mates: “We had the best ballistic solutions possible thanks to the work done at Applied Ballistics LLC by the one and only Bryan Litz. Bryan is also a world-class wind coach and world champion shooter, and just an all-around class act. Paul was also invaluable to making the wind calls we needed to win this match.”

Bryan got second place and Paul got 4th, both using Bryan's 338. There were a lot of shooters even some with 50 BMGs and big heavy guns.

Mitch is a here in Central Michigan, a few miles away, and he built his wildcat 375 Lethal using our 585 HE brass. Made it full length, it is big one on the right in picture.. He used the Lawton Action we had here. Ed

Some info about target 375 wildcats made from 585 HE ,

both about same power, And,the guy in Alaska with the 375 Warlord version, has

released it to public domain, he and I will have formed 375 Warlord cases, in a few weeks.

He has also released the reamer to the public, being made by JGS, so anyone wanting to do

a super ELR rifle, maybe get you a reamer ''now' on first reamer run at JGS,

so maybe you can get a gun done this winter, with reamer in hand. Then

go try the two mile contests next year..Ed

Been having fun lately with ballistic calculators and tried to work up 3,520 yards. None I can find will exceed 2,000 yards, but at that distance, with the load above there is about 100" of fall. Is it more like 300" at 3,520?

I would really like to understand the specifics of this kind of shooting.

What optics are they using?
How big is the target?
At what range do they zero their guns?

I just found this YouTube of the 2016 event.

This is needlessly confrontational.

1. The OP didn't name the shoot, he's just reporting the results.

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/...in-new-mexico/

2. Although they don't shoot all the way out to 2 miles, some targets are placed over 1.9 miles from the line.

http://www.bergerbullets.com/bergers...-king-2-miles/
"During the final stage, targets were shot from 2011, 2480 and 3380 yards."

Well, since they didn't actually shoot two miles, here is the real King of 2 Miles as of this time, and he is French.

close enough to 2 miles for the challenging conditions,

time limit, had to fire 15 shots in 9 min. Barrels got hot,

Across desert canyon, in hot weather, wind never slows,

goes up, down and sideways at same time..Ed

Our friend Brian from the far north went to Africa with his 24ga FH he did in
a NEF break action and got 3 nice buffs with it. Good job.

Our 585HE, 700HE and the great 12ga FH are now in the new COTW book
published in Oct, now out for sale,

We now have our target 375 HE cartridge, made by necking down our 585 HE. Other guys couldn't make enough cases, We have a
bunch of guys doing ours, they are into the 2 mile shooting venues, We're making cases,
testing, reamer prints at reamer guys, we are getting guys going. The 2 mile
shoot last year really got the interest booming for 375 necked from our case,

How we size and seat 375 HE, one simple die, a 1" die, no monster dies needed
A die we can make with resize reamer from reamer guy, a regular die body, then
pass on to the next guy, those reamers can make a pile of dies.

I do primer work separate, not in the press. SO First with lock ring set, I size cases.

When coming back out of dies with case, we notice the case still well centered,
held straight, when it is down as far as the length of the 375 HE neck... IE
the sides and shoulder corner still supported tight.

So we put washer or another lock ring on, same thickness as neck length,
below original lock ring, screw down tight tight in press,

Dies had a 5/8 x 24 thread in top, had powder fill bushing and other stuff same thread,
reamed out from bottom to set bullet height, with ram, case, and bullet up,

After priming, loading in the powder charge, we carefully start(boat tail makes it easy)
bullet in case by hand, slide up in die, into holder, raise ram to to top, bullet seated
perfect. Die can have different thread in top as long as big enough to hold seating
bushing of some kind , that can be made from many items.

These target bullets held in by strong neck tension, no crimping needed, and notice
bullet point will get no marks or dents, fast, easy, no 380-500 buck special dies.
Bushing centering bullet on ogive is very accurate.

OVER 900 375HE cases piled behind presses getting done. About 600 on another
bench nearly ready. Small batches in shelves. And we will do more.

All 375 info, prints, specs, pictures, load data, etc, is public domain, worldwide,
for any target, hunting, etc, use..Ed

That is awesome and congratulations.

I apologize if this is rude but about how much does it cost per round?

Long range shooting is amazing.
As is the Whittington Center range itself.
Almost enough reason to move to New Mexico just for that.
Thanks for the info about it.
Who gets the thankless job of placing the targets way out there?

Another question, of a more serious nature:
What are the risks of eye damage from shooting those long range rifles?
Especially considering the amount of practice it must take to get good at it.

They set guns up so recoil is low so no eye damage from recoil.

Cost, figuring in the case about 2 bucks a round cases loaded
many times depending on pressures.

We are just getting started, tested 300 gr flat base so far, with
200gr ball,will test for speed in increasing weights , up to 400 gr;
Got the 300 gr way over 3800 with longer freebore than what guys
are doing with CEBs, Allows more powder. less pressure problems,
Here is pic of extra old barrel we use checking a dozen freebore fits,
using throater to ream freebore in stages, The bullet being checked in barrel
is 400 gr, and case behind on desk has same and its overall length is 4.05",
and we can get 185gr ball powder under it in the case.

Here are case measurements.

Those 600 cases behind being necked to 375 HE, just need deburring
and 2 passes and they are done.Ed

Here is the neck swage die setup, group using couple like this now.

A threaded die we put sleeve in to fit case, its top is threaded 7/8 x 14.

Bullet seating stems with these dies is same thread and we had a bunch.

They have 30 degree taper in them with hole, we redrill/reamed hole sizes

.020" increments, for last 5 stages, First sets are just 7/8 x 14 die parts with

30 degree chamfer we put on 6 of them. Matches case shoulder taper.

We have 6 more of big threaded dies if some want to get one to sleeve and

make neck swage, CH4 got those top stems to rework.

Most wildcatters got die parts to rework,Ed

Test of 375 HE, 340 gr loaded out in

long freebore, going about 3700,

On the case print the length from

base to shoulder revised to 2.840".. Ed

About the revision in the case and reamer prints, and

about hydraulic forming die setup we made, for 375 HE,

Saves a lot of time and powder, and gets them to chamber size.

The cases we and others necked had kind of what is called

small love handles or donut, at the shoulder. If we tried holding it

all in at the shoulder case too thick there when looked at

by sectioning case . Even when we sectioned them to check

after firing, But doing them in the hydraulic die, which is adjustable,

with debth changes in the die, we was able to get shoulder looking right, by stretching

out the donut, and shoulder forward, gained .020" length to shoulder, so

made our test gun chamber longer, leaving belt step in same place,

from base to shoulder to match, after firing, were better at the shoulder when sectioned,

IE looked better on the inside of case sides to shoulder corner,

and that is how we got the revision for reamer figured out best.

Then got all reamer prints at Manson, PTG, JGS, updated.

Case forming easier, proportions better, little more volume.

Our hydro die, we made adjustable base, made things lot easier.

In essence an adjustable chamber.. Ed

Got guys getting excited including family,on 416, so making up 416 cases for

it already and doing final 416 HE, reamer print, have an action ready ,

already have a 416 test barrel here to check it in, when they put it in the

action in few days, and will be load and speed testing when cold spell breaks.

Please check this out, a new real long range shoot planned for

this summer in South Texas. Ed

Here is the before and after of 375 HE cases
necked, 2 on left, and then formed in hydro die... Ed

We now have 416 HE, with cases ahead and
working on maybe the ultimate 416
Here is pic of 416 HSM second from left.
Can be 3.60" to 4.00" long, ac long one pictured.
Holds 280 gr ball powder under bullet. The
3.6" case can hold about 250gr under bullet.. In picture,
1st case is 416 HE, 2nd 416 HSM, 3rd 375 He, 4th 378 WEA.

Manson has 416 HE and 408 HE prints, as well as 375 HEHe can also make you a resize die reamer from that info.We got 700 cases in 416 and one more pass if 408s wanted, , Going to do more cases for these 2 sizes,

PM or email. ph 989-644-5228.. Here are specs for 416 HE .Length 3.32", belt diameter ,655", base dia .635" , length base to
shoulder 2.860" , 30 deg shoulder.

Our 416 HSM will have about 25gr more capacity than regular 50bmg, and as for actions if you add up the fat bolt non-bmg actions, with .750"- .800" bolts, there are about a dozen, some priced pretty reasonable.

Here is picture of 416 HSM fireformed once, next to bmg case we make it from and as we improve wildcatting process next few weeks some specs may make small changes, now from base to shoulder is 3.45", case 3.97" long. Ed.

Here is picture of our 416 HSM case sectioned next to original BMG case on the right sectioned, to show that we still have enough thickness in the sides to handle high pressure, in a case with 310 gr capacity...

We are getting the wildcatting work set up so we can do couple hundred a month.

We still have thousands of 585s, 375HEs, 416 HEs, 408 HEs,,Ed

Bryan Litz just recently shot 3 shot group at 2 miles using Paul Phillips heavy barreled, target rifle built by Lethal Precision in 375 Lethal Mag(585HE necked down, very similiar to 375HE )... It grouped 17.5 inches tall by 22 inches wide.

I understand that there was 2-3 times as many guys wanting to try the 2 mile shoot at Whittington than there was openings for. So check out Tonopah, NV 2-Mile Match Aug 24 - 26, 2017

Dates are August 24 to 26 (site zeros on the 23rd)

Even thinking about trying to make a shot that far away makes my head hurt.
But then again I've only shot past 300y a handful of times.. there just aren't many ranges setup for longer then that.. I wonder where they trained?

I shoot 600 yds weekly, and I've shot 1K a few times, quite challenging, I can't fathom a 1.7 mi. shot.... someday on my bucket list is to head out west with a 338LM and try !!

Here's comparison of 416 target cases, 1st 416 HE, have whole bunch.
Second is model of what I'd have made on medium machine, if I could,
the 416 HE Long. It has capacity of 230gr..
Third is our 416 HSM which we are working on making by wildcatting bmg
cases, And if had big run long cases made, we'd make longer 375 HE
by necking down 416 . Ed..

The 12ga FH case now is in the new COTW book on
last page in the wildcat section, I think page 324.
They gave good credit to Rob for the idea of that case....

The model 416 HE long case in middle, hydro formed one,

has case capacity of 240 gr, and the 416 HSM in picture,

on the right, we fired a case twice, capacity is 320gr.. Ed..

Shooters talking more now; short, fat cases sticking, pockets not lasting as expected.
Trying to get best speeds the things raising pressures are bad case proportions, too fast of
powders, and the debth of the bullet into the powder space, as shown in the picture below..
My 375, 416, etc testing, bullets loaded like bottom one, in longer freebore....Ed.
