45-70 Trap door powder
Anyone out there use TITEGROUP or UNIQUE powders for Trap door loads. Looking for a less expensive powder other than Trail Boss for reloading. Any comments, data appreciated.

Unique is unsuitable due to the high start pressure.
TiteGroup could be used, but at a safe pressure the velocity is low. I'm using QuickLoad software and here is the data.... 300 grain Hornady bullet 26 inch barrel TiteGroup 15 grains COAL 2.550 inches 22861 PSI 1391 FPS |

Google 45-70 loads for Unique and you'll get several sites with information. I've loaded it with 405g cast bullets and have gotten pretty fair accuracy. However, my very best groups with any smokeless powder so far have been with Trail Boss. Can't get much velocity out of it but for shooting whitetails it's more than adequate. You can get around 1150fps with it and that's pretty good for intermediate sized animals like whitetail. With the cost of bullets being what it is, the cost of powder shouldn't be the show stopper. You're not really saving much money by using something else if Trail Boss works well for you. If you're looking for more velocity or a more accurate load it makes some sense to try other powders. My second best loads have been with 4198. FYI-I've gotten several five shot groups under an inch with Trail Boss. Won't do it every time but it's always well under 2" groups.

Thank you. Now it means something. Good shooting for a .45-70.
The 'US' was the forum. Some of US shoot from 50-1000 yards, so without knowing what distance you were shooting, we have nothing to reference it to. |
