.40 S&W other than a Glock

Recommendations for a .40 non Glock. Looking for something different that is a good shooter for this caliber.

Local gun store has a 4006 in good condition for $399. Good deal or just so so?

Solid deal if it's in high condition. If it has original box and extra mags, even better deal!

The 4006 is the original .40 S&W chambered handgun although it is worth noting that Glock stole some .40cal ammo from a trade show display and reverse engineered a G17 to rush the Glock 22 to market before the 4006 was actually available for sale.

Why “steal ammo from a trade show” for a SAMMI spec’d round???

This one gets my vote. I have the full size with full Apex spring kit with flat faced trigger, and it's a sweet shooter. Also have a 9mm conversion barrel for it and it works equally well.

My three favorites are my Beretta 96, my Tanfoglio Witness in 40 caliber, and my Glock 22. My 1911 and Beretta PX40 are very good, too.

Another vote for the S&W 4006. It's boringly reliable and unbelievably soft shooting .40.

A big consideration for many who are recoil sensitive but still want a larger caliber than 9mm. Rod

At that time, the .40 S&W was developed prior to a firearm being on the market that would fire the round. Even though S&W developed the .40 S&W with Winchester, Glock got the Glock 22 to market a few weeks before S&W got a .40 pistol to market.

I knew Glock got their pistol out for sale first, however, I had not previously heard that they stole rounds from a trade show. Interesting.

I like the look of the 4006, but I wonder about parts availability and support from S&W on an old production model.

I'd go with the M&P 2.0 5" FDE if I was looking for a new .40 full size pistol. I prefer 9mm and have the 4" 2.0 and love it and am looking for a deal on the 5".

There are still LOTS of parts out there. I own eleven S&W 3rd gen pistols and I'm not worried about being able to pick up springs and other wearable parts like extractors.

S&W MP Shield 40, FNS or FNX 40 (I think FNH makes a compact version now).

The Shield did have to have an Apex Trigger Kit put in.

OH, I have a Glock 27 also

Last time I looked around parts were not nearly as available as a number of years ago. They can still be found just not as easily.

Lots of good choices here. I own, and am delighted with, a CZ 75B and a Smith M&P, so I recommend those heartily. If you'll let me fudge a little, my SIG P220 in 10 mm is so outstanding that I'm certain it would be a great choice in .40, as would a P226.

If you're going with .40, there's no reason not to buy a police trade in.

PD M&P can be had for <$300

PD USP .40 can be had for <$500

PD Glock 22 or 23 can be had for <$350

PD SIG 226 & 229 can be had for <$450

A third vote for a Smith Model 4006. Solid auto made like a tank and as reliable as the sun rising in the east. It's a mite on the heavy side and you should be a fan of a da/sa action for self-defense as I am to get the most out of it. Some don't like looks of the "ears" protecting the fully adjustable rear sight but I appreciate the utilitarian purpose of them and I certainly like the fact that the sight settings can be changed with only a screwdriver.

As Sevens opined, $399.99 is a "solid" deal for this pistol. I predict the price for all "Third Generation" pistols will steadily climb as time goes on.
