Added Another Savage 219 to My Collection

I couldn't help myself and bought another Savage 219. Last fall I bought a Savage 219 in .22 Hornet. It had an engraved receiver and I couldn't pass it up. Bought it for under $400.00. Then in December after reading more about the 219's I decided to get a 30-30 Win barrel for it. I eventually found one on-line with forearm wood for $140.00. I had to fit the barrel to the receiver for complete lock up. I drilled and tapped both barrels and fitted them with bases and scopes.

The 219's were produce in four calibers: .22 Hornet, 25-20, 32-20 and 30-30. Recently I noticed several 219's for sale in .25-20, a rare caliber which got me to thinking. They were all selling for $800 and up, pretty pricey. I started searching for one in .25-20. I found a third one for sale at GUNS.com. They were also asking $800.00. I didn't need it, but a third one in .25-20 would be nice. I cast, reload and shoot a lot of .25-20 so this would fit in. I offered $700.00 for it from GUNS.com. They accepted and I'll have the gun next week.

I bought a very nice 219 in Hornet last year. Dirt cheap because it don’t work. Like 90% condition. Barrel is dovetailed for scope bases. Parts are rough to come by. Trouble is they want $300 for beaters.

Some years ago my friend Dave gave me his Dad's 219 in .30-30 for helping him and his family clean out their family farm and get it ready for auction.

Very light,very handy, but I've still never gotten it out to the range.

I've been looking, on and off, for a .32-20 barrel for it since then and have never come even remotely close to finding one.

I have the 30-30 and it is a fun gun with a Lyman 170 grain gas check cast bullet.
Light charges of Unique and you can shoot all day, light recoil.
It will do it's part if I do mine at 100 yards.

Okay got new batteries for my Minolta camera. Here are my Savage 219's. Top is a .22 Hornet, it's sporting a butt stock that I made last year. Also, I drilled and tapped the barrel for the scope base. I modified the scope base to fit the barrel contour. Still haven't finished the finish. I'm working on three other stocks. One is for a HK 770, owner resides in CA.

Second is a 30-30 barrel with scope. I also drilled and tapped this barrel for the scope base. Also, modified this scope base to fit the barrel.

Bottom is the .25-20 that I just bought. It also needs to be drilled and tapped. It has two holes drilled and tapped, but one is slightly off centered. I'm out of bases, so I order correct bases for the 219 and should have them tomorrow. It also needs a savage butt plate.

My Hornet is a 219c. It doesn’t cock. I wonder if all 219 barrels will work on all series 219 actions? Also a guy claims he has a 219 zipper barrel for sale. I think he is confused and has a 219 22 Hornet barrel.
I had a nice 25/20 couple years back. I had excellent luck loading spitzer bullets in 30/30 so I did same with 25/20. I had K4 on it and got 1.5” at 100yds. With 25/20 bullets JFPs I was getting about 3” at 100. Before I had D&T for scope I got ahold of some bulk rejects of Win Western 25/20 bullets. The bullets had ended up as round nose, the exposed lead was at the base. These were the best shooting of any jacket bullet I’ve shot in 25/20s. I look for them at every show. They were manf in 60s and in plain white box with WW Olin Industries on box

DRM50, The 219's cock on the opening of the lever when it is pushed to the right. Make sure you are pushing the lever all the way to the right. Only half way will not cock the the rifle. If he has a 219 Zipper barrel it is a 22 hornet re-chambered to 219 Zipper. I had one, but couldn't get it to group so I sold it.

I recall reading something some years ago saying that older barrels won't work reliably on newer actions?

I think you are correct about older barrels not working with newer receivers. I had the .22 Hornet rifle first, then bought the 30-30 barrel. It would not lock-up when closed. I had to take a 1/2" round file to the pivot point. A few strokes at a time until it locked. I haven't tried the 25-20 barrel yet on the first receiver. D&T the barrel today for a mount and have a scope on it.

Has anyone ever successfully chased down a 219 barrel in .32-20?

The .32-20 is one of my favorite cartridges -- I'd love to have one for my 219.

I’ve messed a bit with 219s. I had a 25/20 barrel that when put on a later model 30/30 had head space big time. I’ve herd of others that were the opposite and wouldn’t clear recoil shield.
