Better platforms for a scope, they look wrong, generally they effect the function of the rifle.I.E. hammer extensions, goofy rings and bases. Many really good thing have been said about the "Skinner" peep sights, less obtrusive, very functional and will improve accuracy over semi-buckhorn sights.

IMO, a scope that big would look like the tail wagging the dog. Receiver peep sights have worked on .30-30 rifles for over 100 years, but if you must scope it, I would suggest a low-powered variable like the 1-3X20 Weaver V3, or something like a Leupold M8-3x. . |

The fixed power 2.5 Leupold would be an option. I just like the 1-4X a little better. Mainly to get the lower 1X. It is still a light scope. No reason to go larger than 2-7X.

I have a single 4 power on my 336 3030. I think its perfect. Not too big, fits gun good. I think its a 30mm but not sure. Def not bigger than that. Its a cheap bushnell sportview i had laying around so decided to throw it on. Im not a fan of the peep sights. Never use to be a fan of scopes either. Always liked the open iron sights but the older im getting, i think im needing a little help seeing.lol

I have a Bushnell 1.5X - 4.5X on a couple of my rifles and have been very impressed by quality. These scopes sell on eBay for about $70.

Jack's choice is a top one in my mind for getting the most for my money. On my newest 30-30, which is. 336xlr, I put a Leupold 2-7x, which is as much power as I put on them. I choose low rings, and enjoy the high quality optics.

With those lever 30-30s. I think a single power scope would be sufficient. A decent 4-power with good rings and mount would make your rifle a great short range deer harvester having good eye relief. But if you feel otherwise or want selective powers. Go for it.

Well, I went with a Nikon 2-7x32 with good low rings. It should be here early next week. I have a few other rifles it'd work with just fine if it doesn't go well with the 30-30 but I'm thinking it'll go just fine. Fingers crossed.

That 2-7x32 on low profile rings is a good choice. Personally, I put a Leupold 2-7x32 VX-1 using low profile Leupold QRW rings on my Marlin 336A, it is also a good match. I really like the quick release rings in this application as I can quickly take the scope off if I want to go with the stock irons, the Weaver mount does not interfere with the irons.
