Setting up known distance firing stakes

I need some kind of known distance measuring filament of about 300 yards. Does anyone have any ideas ?

How about using a measured amount of fishing line on an inexpensive reel.
Just reel it out when needed, and reel it back when done.

Thanks, I also found Surveyor's Rope on Amazon. I think I remember from when I was in the Army, the Engineers used to use a chain.

Why not just pick up a 200 or 300 foot open reel tape measure? The fiberglass tapes are pretty reasonable, and probably close enough for your uses.

Surveyors still call their steel tapes, "chains".

How about pacing it off? Do you know how long your stride is? "About 300 yards" is pretty easy if you don't need inch precision.

They make those measuring wheel things that you roll on the ground with a handle. They have an odometer that measures feet or yards or something. Can't remember exactly what they're called...
