I had the Bushy M4 with the Mini Y comp. I hated that damned comp so much, I sold the rifle. I should have just sawn it off and crowned the barrel. My new M1a came with the cali. brake, and the first thing I did was to buy a flash hider. Still wating on it to come it. I'd like to use the M1a on an ocassional hunt, but I'd lose the shot due to a flinch knowing what the crack of the muzzle break is going to do to my ears. I fired th M-4 ONCE without ear protection to see what it was like, just incase I wanted to take it up to the stand. After the bleeding stopped, I used plugs in my ears. It also blew gas in your face when you shot it.

still asking the same question:

do flash-hiders raise noise and blast levels as much as brakes?

Thanks,
Mike

I'll take a guess and say that a slotted type flash hider is going to redirect some sound to the sides, but not back.
If, on the other hand you had a cone type like the M1 C/D or the Enfeild Jungle Carbine that should actually keep a little bit of the sound pointed downrange and away from you.

No, not to the shooter, since the blast isn't directed back at your face like most brakes do. But I have had others mention that the FS on my M1A does produce a bit more side blast to bystanders than a similar weapon with a plain muzzle.

From My Experience I've seen Muzzle brakes clear off empty soda cans and boxes from tables and YES they are Louder. "This One goes to Eleven" "Well its One Louder Isn't it".
