How can you tell???
Alright all you Glockofiles. I see all of you all talking about the different generations of Glocks. How can you tell?
I have a model 23 that has a rail under the barrel. Does that make it a gen 3? |

You must become one with the Glock... then they'll tell you.
Yes, 3rd gen is finger-grooved front strap and accessory rail (no rail on the sub-compacts).

Yours is Gen3 unless it has detachable backstraps and a reversible magazine catch.

If you Google "Glock Generations" you'll find lots of images on-line.

I don't mind putting it simply for ya!
Gen 1: No rough texture anywhere on the frame, no rail. I believe the Glock 17 is the only Glock that came in a Gen 1, but refer to my screen name. Gen 2: Rough Texture added to the front and back strap of the pistol. Smoother sides. This generation encapsulated the recoil spring assembly whereas the Gen 1 had a spring that could come off of the guide rod. Gen 2.5: This wasn't considered a true Glock Generation because it lasted a very short time. It was Just like the Glock Gen 2 but with Finger Grooves. No frame rail. Gen 3: Same texture as Gen 2 and 2.5 with the finger grooves and an added frame rail for the first time. Gen 4: Different grip sizes based on backstraps, dual recoil spring, reversible and enlarged magazine release, new RTF3 texture. The RTF2 series was not considered a new Gen, but a modified Gen 3 with a very rough grip and (depending on the manufacturing date) fish scale slide serrations. Gen 3 also offered Olive Drab frame colors.

Another note is, the Gen 4's say "Gen 4" on them, right after the model number. Not sure about the other generations, but the above posters seemed to have handle that.

Pretty sure Gen 4 finally has the sights on the side of the frame.
