Buy the 300 WSM. You can always down load its cartridges to suit the big game found in Michigan and too tweak its cartridge power so to give a slight edge in the harvesting of those biggest of bull elk found in the Rockies at just about any distance.
Considering the WSM has a short throw bolt similar to your 243s bolt which is kind of handy if you've grown use too a short throw bolt. If still considering the purchase of a 30-06. Let me be clear Deerhunt. I am not at all fond of the 30-06 cartridge. Just saying: There are better calibers that you would be suited to hunt with and shoot than a 06. 270 Win would be a good choice. I can definitely promote its buying. Probably because I own and shoot one myself so I do have experience in its ability to put down the biggest bucks in a sister State to yours. (MN) Tip: 270 Win has a reputation of good or better than the accuracy of a 06. And less shoulder punishing recoil. That's a known fact even by those who shoot a 06 on purpose. |

"I am not at all fond of the 30-06 cartridge."
We all make mistakes. Seriously though, if I were looking for a lever action 30-06, I'd try and track down a Browning clone of the 1895 Winchester. You'd have to go with a scout style scope setup due to the top ejection but otherwise it should fit the OP's needs. Biggest problem would be finding one. IIRC, they were a rather limited edition. Mine is a lot of fun to shoot. Paul B.

For what purpose
Everyone has an opinion on what is "Best". Most of the opinions on this forum are sound, logical, and will work just fine. But often these threads take a turn from the OP to some other conversation.
I wouldn't worry about performance, they are too close to call and I can make a .30-06 perform better than a factory WSM with my hand loads. You have to ask yourself A) Do you want a long or short action? WSM will be short, .30-06 will be long, B) Do you mind only having 3 rounds in a standard mag or would you rather have 4? WSM is fatter so only 3 in a standard mag while '.06 will have 4 in a BLR (or bolt action for that matter). C) Do you hand load? while WSM isn't too hard to find, you can get '.06 ammo at wally world, or anywhere for that matter. D.) Is barrel life important to you? in other words will you be shooting it often? The '.06 is easier on barrels because the WSM is far more "overbore" than the '.06. E.) Does ammo price matter to you? Because '.06 will be cheaper if evaluated at the same quality level If it were me, I would go with a .30-06 in YOUR specific situation and in response to YOUR question. I personally have dozens of rifles, AR-10's, Ak's, .243, .270 win, .300 wm and several others...But I hunt white tail with a Henry lever-action 30/30, no scope. |

Not to derail the thread, but has the OP considered the .308 win version of the BLR? Nearly the same ballistics of the .30-'06 cartridge, but in a short action, and less recoil to boot.
I had one thirty years ago (got stupid and sold it) and at the time thought it was the best lever rifle out there. Took many deer with that thing, and even now I wish I still had it. |

If you REALLY want a good gun for everything like that, then check out the CheyTac Intervention M200. They shoot .408 cartridges you can buy off their website:
http://www.cheytac.com/shop/firearms/m200-intervention/ You could probably buy two used cars for the price, but it's worth it. [IMG]

I really like my 270 WSM's. From 35-350 yds, the deer just seem to drop. I use 130 gr. Sierra and RL19.

I live in a western state. I've hunted plenty of big game... Mule deer, elk, bear, wolves, antelope. Only one rifle in a Browning 7 Mag. That is my universal do it all rifle.
Of the choices you mentioned I'd choose the 300 WSM only because I find the 30-06 and the talk all boring. Yawn. Be prepared though to either reload or pay heavily for the 300 WSM ammo. |

I have had no problems with 30-06, I have yet to get a 270 to shoot 1 MOA let alone sub. So I do shoot 30-06 on purpose and I am in complete disagreement. |

That's strange. The .270 is considered one of the easiest cartridges to make accurate. In fact it is recommended by many experienced hand loaders for novices to start with the .270. 130 gr bullets and H4831 is 1/2 moa at nearly every single charge weight in my wife's rifle, a Ruger American rifle. My brothers win model 70 in .270 is the same story....Same in my dad's browning A bolt. I mean no offense, but getting a .270 to shoot is elementy in my, and just about everyone else's experience. |

My vote is 30-06. Not a lot of recoil and cheap ammo is everywhere and it kills deer pretty dead.

300wsm in a BLR will probably be quite stiff such a light rifle
I have one in 358win but that is more of a soft push I am gonna try loading a light bullet to really see how acurate and flatshooting it can be, had 308 blr and accuracy was excellent, albeit not a rifle you shot tons of rapid fire with due to the thin barrel |

Whee! Back around 1964 I bought a J.C. Higgins .270. Gave $70 for it. K-4. Handloads. Basically one MOA or a wee skosh over.
Tweaked my '06. Over some 35 years, reliably sub-MOA with handloads. Back when the .300 WSM first came out, I figured that it was a great cartridge for handloaders. Can do light loads like I've done with my '06, but max loads are a bit above it. What's not to like? |
