Bud's Guns (online) usually has police trade-in Smith and Wesson Model 10 38 special revolvers for $300 or so. A friend of mine bought one in December.

All of the handguns that the OP mentioned are ones that I own or owned and are good choices. However, $500 for a used Beretta 96 is way too expensive.

Kings Firearms Online has police trade-in Glocks and Smith and Wesson M&P's for sale for under $400. Most of them are 40 caliber, IIRC. I got an M&P 45acp from them for $249 before Christmas.

As of now, I am deciding between a used Kahr CM9, priced at $299, an EAA Tanfoglio Witness in .45 caliber, priced at $289, a new Smith and Wesson SDVE 9mm priced at $349, and one of several Ruger P-Series pistols, priced in the $290 range. I am leaning towards the Kahr due to its concealability and double action trigger mechanism.

I am very happy with my Kahr pistols as well. CW40, CW45, and two PM9s.

Keep in mind that whatever you buy isn't in stone. Once you have it and have shot it a few times if you determine that you don't really like it you can always trade it off for something else. It also may turn out that you too have MGS. (Multi Gun Syndrome)

I ended up purchasing a Sig SP2022 .40 S&W on sale for $350 at my local gunstore. Liking it so far.

I'll throw another vote to the Kahr. You can find them gently used for less than 3 bills, and its a lot of gun for that small money. It's very flat and easy to conceal, and I like the trigger. It's very reminiscent of a DA revolver trigger. The only problem is you have to order mags and holsters online because most brick and mortar stores won't carry them.

When I was looking for a pocket pistol I settled on the CM9. Smoother trigger than anything else at the time. Shoots well and is reliable. Only thing I don't like is it only like to utilize the slide release to chamber a round. Racking the slide causes it to jam for some reason. That being said it has never failed to chamber using the release and that is what Kahr recommends anyway.

As an owner, and user of a Kahr CM9 I can say you will not be disappointed making it your choice. Only one minor issue, which just takes my effort to get used to. The dot and post sight system.
