I got two at once when my grandfather passed. A 1943/1944 Remington Rand mixmaster and a 1946 Sistema Colt.

My first was an ODI Viking Combat back in the early '80s. ODI's claim to fame was that their guns came from the factory with Seecamp double action systems. I bought another one a few years ago in a fit of nostalgia, it was exactly as bad as I remembered.

Want to add that this has been a pretty entertaining thread. I have several custom Colts that were built by well known and unknown gunsmiths. I'm not sure who will build my next custom but I sure do know who it won't be.

Anybody else have a hankering for a plate of Lambourguine with clam sauce?

When I was a young man, my dad offered to buy me a gun for my birthday. We went to a gun show and I picked out a 1911. My dad thought that was "too much gun" for me at that age, and made me pick out something different.

I eventually got around to buying my own 1911, but it was many years later. I picked out a Springfield Armory GI model. I bought it at a gun show, and within the hour, some skeevy-looking guy tried to buy it from me. At the gun show. Without seeing what was in the case. In spite of the fact that there were probably 500 just like it within 100 feet of him . . .

I got to shoot it once. Three weeks later, someone broke into my house and stole it.

I still check the inventory on every search and seizure incident report that crosses my desk to see if, by some chance, it shows up.

GI Remington, bought in the mid 60s from a pawn shop for $40. Polished it up and had it blued (I know ruined it), shot it a bunch early on with the plastic grips. Haven't shot it in recent memory. Put the Colt grip panels on it several years ago.

Brings back a lot of fond memories.

My first was a Kimber Custom that I bought new in 1999. Still have it. Then came, in order, a Colt Series 80 Gov't, Colt Commander, SA GI, and last an SA Ultra Compact. All in .45ACP. I still have all of them but the SA GI is on a long term (probably terminal) loan to my son.

The Colt Commander is the best looking but the Kimber is definitely the most accurate of the five.

It's also my favorite, even the I've now got a Colt, Springfield, and another Kimber (Classic Gold Match).

My first . . . and only . . . 1911 was a Colt 1911A1. WhenI was a kid backing the 60s, a friend of my Dad's knew I liked guns. One day, he handed me a grocery sack and said, "This is for you. I have no need for it.". When I looked inside, there was a pistol belt, mag pouch with two mags, holster and a pristine Colt parkerized 1911A1 - all government issued! It had been given to my Dad's friend by a Navy pilot who had carried it and brought it home after WWII.

I shot it a few times but could never hit the broad side of barn with it. Another friend of my Dad's, who was like a second father to me and he was a Marine in the Pacific during the war, taught me how to field strip the 1911 blindfolded one day on a bench in the back of his hardware store.

I kept the 1911A1 and trappings for many years but finally sold it as I wasn't shooting it and figured a Colt lover should have it. And yes, it brought very good money. Like many things in life, sometimes we regret things we have done. I'm glad somebody got it who would take care of it and enjoy it. But, now I'm thinking I might like to add the 45 cap to my line of cartridges that I reload. At some point, I might add a 1911 and have considered the Springfield gov. version. Just the history of the 1911 is fascinating and I can see why some folks are really wrapped up in them. Mostly though, I'm a vintage revolver guy and my wheeelguns far out number the two semi-autos I have. Amazing that the 1911 has always retained its popularity but when something works, it works!

I avoided 1911's for the longest time and even the .45 acp altogether. I decided to get a Sig P245 which I hated. I shot extremely well with my P228 in 9mm and my P229 in .40 S&W, but the P245 and I did not get along. I took it to a gun show and traded it for a hard chromed Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special (plus cash of course). I have to say it was the best move of my life. I love that gun and everyone who shoots it is amazed by how well it shoots.

My first, and only is a Springfield TRP. Bought it about 10 years ago and it's a fantastic gun. I did replace the FLGR with an Ed Brown GI plug and rod and otherwise it's stock.

My only model 1911 A1 is a Springfield Armory GI 45 model. Unfortunately, it has been plagued by erratic ejection.

It was given to me by a good friend whose son bought 2 identical pistols at the same time when coming back from a deployment in the Middle East. His pistol functions perfectly.

My first 1911, a 1948-made Argentine Sistema Colt, was purchased in the early 80s. Someone had worked on it and it had an incredible trigger and was a tack-driver despite its original tiny military sights. Some time later, in a fit of stupidity, I traded it away.

Four years later, while shopping a pawn shop in San Antonio, I recognized it in their handgun display case and bought it for less than I had sold it. I feel incredibly fortunate to have recovered it.
