7mm WSSM

I was thinking of suitable carrtridges for some informal long range shooting (1,000 yards +), and a smattering of some 600 yard F Open matches.

It got me curious as to necking the 25 WSSM (largest caliber made in WSSM) to 7mm.

Thoughts?

Case capacity would be about equal to 7mm-08 if you can seat the bullets out far enough to not eat up capacity. How hard is wssm brass to locate? Seems like the wssm line didnt go over very well

In talking with someone that has done 6.5 WSSM, brass is somewhat available. And the WSSM is supposed to be thick, and really hard.
He mentioned that the 150-168gr bullets might do really well with it, but not so much the heavier bullets.

Would be an interesting project but why limit yourself to mid weight bullets. Their are some great high bc 7mm bulletts out now. How about using 6.5prc brass necked up to 7mm? Might still require a long action though for the big vld bullets.

A guy I used to shoot with built one for 1k shooting. He built it on a long action so he could shoot heavy bullets. It never was very impressive, but maybe if he had stuck with it long enough he might have got it worked out. He went back to 284 Winchester, which in my opinion is the best 1k 7mm out there. Its definitely arguable the 284AI is a better windy day cartridge. The 284 needs to be built on either a long action or a single shot action. The 7 WSM is a fine 1k cartridge if built on a long action The 7 SAUM is not shabby at 1k either.
If you can tolerate the barrel life, the 6mm wssm improved is a monster.

No, i was looking for decent barrel life.
I have found someone using a 28" barrel getting 2,850fps with 180-184gr bullets.
He's at 1,800 rounds down the tube, when he last talked about it in 2018.
Case life has been good for him also, at over 30 reloadings on the cases.
Annealing about every 5 reloads. Necks splitting at 7 reloads without annealing.

I'll try contacting him directly, to get latest round count and more info.

Another attempt to reinvent the wheel. Probably an utter waste of time, but maybe not. Perhaps the best wheel is yet to come. Let us know if you learn something useful.

Though i'm not an AR guy.
I'm actually hearing of velocities in the 2, 800 fps range with 180gr bullets, albeit out of a 30" barrel.

Actually just the kind of velocities i was hoping for with a 180.

Was mostly a 3AM "hey, i wonder if anyone has tried this" moment.
