lil'gun or H110 for 500 mag loads

Greetings everyone,

I have a few hundred 700gr cast bullets for my 500. I wanna load some NUCLEAR rounds. Ive heard bad things about lil'gun and h110. Im particularly concerned about forcing cone erosion allegedly caused by lil'gun. Im gonna buy a keg of one or the other. Does any one have any experience/opinions??? Ps yes I use aa#9 and spear 400 grains for accurate manageable loads.

Thanks

I don't know about in the 500, but is 32 S&W Long, 357 mag, and 45 auto rim 1.555" AOL, I can get more velocity with LIL'GUN, but burning H110 smells better.

I also haven't loaded .500 S&W, but I do load .357 and .44 mag. 'Lil Gun and H110 really aren't all THAT different in the two cartridges... a couple grains or so difference for the most part. I've been using H110 and I was able to get some 'Lil Gun a while back to try out. The burn rates are close (not exact, but not that far off), the consistency of the powder is similar (H110 might be a bit finer, but that's about it). I have a little more experience with H110, but I just don't know that we're going to be talking a big difference unless the peculiarities of the .500 bring small differences to the forefront.

I'm not sure you'd see a huge difference between them. With how availability of handgun powder is currently running I'd probably use whatever I could get my hands on.

I have used LiLGun in 500SW many times. IMHO, it is superior if you want to get the most out of the 500 SW.
I have fired some 700gr bullets out of one and will never do so again.

The X-Frame with max loads is a 70K PSI capable handgun. When you max your loads out, forcing cone and top strap erosion WILL and SHOULD be expected. Does not matter whether you are using Lil Gun, 110 or ANY powder.

If top strap erosion is a concern, keep your pressures down.

Chefr: Thanks for you reply. I figured pushing full house loads behind a 700gr would cause some wear and tear. I've seen alot of people saying that for one reason or another lil'gun causes greatly accelerated wear on magnum handguns.

Armed_chicago: I have a friend that runs a shop and is keeping a little stash in the back

Techno: Alot of loads I see for the 500 show lil'gun being a superior powder. But your probably right if they are that close why risk messing up my baby when alot of people say lil'gun messed up their guns.

H110.

It will remain useful, and equally so for other cartridges......

I do not recommend the use of Lil' Gun to anyone for use in a revolver. There was not enough increase in performance from Lil' Gun over H110/W296 and IMR4227 in my .460 to warrant the increase in heat it produces and the chance of premature forcing cone erosion. My .460 really likes IMR4227 and heavy bullets.

I have a pound of Alliant power pro 300mp that's supposed to give more velocity than h110/w296 for magnum cartridges according to Alliant. I've only used it for 30 carbine loads because I like 2400 the best for 357mag but you might want to check it out if your looking for a hot load and can find it. Handloader magazine did some testing with impressive results. It looks a lot like h11/w296 but it's supposed to be a little slower.

Yeah maybe ill try that. Ive had ALOT of good experiences with alliant powder. One of the problems is there isnt too much data on 700gr bullets for the 500. Its pretty much (as far as the data I can find) a battle between h110 and lil'gun. Ive just hear scary things about lil'gun. Im starting to think that chirfr is right and any powder at that pressure is gonna be hard on my gun. But buck460 kind of convinced me that if there isnt much of a difference why not just go with h110.

Yeah here's a few;

Do they hurt? Sure do!

As for H-110/296 or LIL-GUN, I've heard the same stories about LIL-GUN causing cylinder gap wear/erosion. I have never heard about forcing cone erosion on a revolver. The concern is always the back of the barrel getting eroded to increase the cylinder gap.

Proper charges of H-110 will punish you enough and kill anything in front of the gun.

Li'l Gun

Yes, I have loaded those bullets and Li'l Gun for my 500 S&W.
I am, however, shooting them from a T/C Encore.
I will say that...I am not recoil shy.....those hurt from shot number one.
My favorite loading is the 600 grainer: those hurt too.

Speaking from first hand experience, I used to own a S&W PC .460 and handloaded for it with both Lil'Gun and H110. With the Lil'Gun I got higher velocities and to me a bit more accuracy but after 2lbs of it I ruined my barrel. Serious throat erosion. I played dumb and S&W replaced it for free. After that I switched back to H110/W296 and a couple of pounds of it later there was no erosion. Take it for what its worth.
