I am considering an SBR 10/22. Anyone know at what point a 22lr stops gaining energy from a longer barrel? What will cutting it down to 12 or 14 cost me in FPS?

is there a particular reason you're looking to make a sbr 10/22 instead of just buying a ruger 10/22 charger?

are you curious about the velocity for hunting reasons?

The ten inch barrel on the Charger seems to be about the idea length for the pistol. The muzzle has a recessed crown, and the barrel is of a medium-heavy profile, measuring .920 inch at the receiver and tapering to .664 inch at the muzzle. Testing for velocity loss from the shorter barrel compared to a longer one, I fired over my PACT chronograph the same ammunition from both the Charger and a 10/22 with a sixteen inch Tactical Solutions lightweight bull barrel. As an example, high velocity Federal hollowpoint ammo averaged 1203 feet-per-second (fps) from the sixteen inch barrel, but still averaged 1163.9 fps from the ten inch Charger barrel. Not bad at all. Target grade standard velocity ammo lost even less velocity. The trigger pull on the test pistol measured just under four pounds. The .22 Charger weighs in at 3 lbs., 9.6 ounces empty. Adding the bipod and a Leupold scope brought the total weight up to 5 lbs., 1.3 ounces ready to go.

Yeah,what would it be used for?That's one of the first questions you gotta
ask yourself before doing somthing as big as this to your gun.

Consider a ruger charger first.You can keep your 10/22 as is and just use the
$200 for the tax stamp to buy a charger.

I've been considering the same thing for a couple reasons.

1) I don't have a SBR and want one in my collection.
2) I would like to have a .22 that is set up like a SMG with a folding stock
3) I could SBR a 10/22 and use the same cheap hi caps I already have and it would still be cheaper than buying a GSG 5 which wouldn't have either a short barrel or stock, both of which I want.
4) It would be different and fun
5) a charger wouldn't be nearly as fun as a SBR to fire from the hip at attacking zombie pine cones.

I'm thinking about a SBR 10/22 so I can keep cheap factory brick ammo subsonic. Combine a ~5" barrel with my TAC-62 suppressor, the result will be a package that is just as quiet as my 22/45 + TAC-62 setup, but able to mount optics and be more accurate with a stock.

To me, the ability to keep regular ammo subsonic combined with a suppressor is the main advantage of a SBR 10/22. Plus the OAL with the can attached is much more compact as well.

Though I would personally use an aftermarket steel receiver for durability instead of a factory aluminum receiver.

Well, I like google too, but I just don't rely on the info I find using it for making large purchases. Especially when I realy don't know enough to say if the answer is reasonable enough or not.

A charger is a pistol. You can not put a butt-stock on it. Or atleast that is my understanding. This rifle would be designed to use a suppressor, so goes right along the SMG idea. Really just want a fast pointing carbine that can pump out dirt cheap 22lr ammo.
I think I am going with a 16" pre-threaded barrel after looking at the costs..

10/22s with short barrels are great.
I started out with a 12" Tactical Innovations barrel. Why 12" ? I asked them that myself. That is the shortest barrel you can use without modifying a standard stock. That is a real nice length. I was really happy with it.
But, I got talked into replacing the 12" barrel with a 5" barrel.
That is cool also. But, I miss the 12". So, I would like to register another reciever and put the 12" back in service.
Don't half*** it. Get what you want.
Is the shorter barrel going to cost you velocity ?
Sure it is. But this gun pictured below still has an inch more barrel than my 4" Ruger Mk.II

I did similar but with a BC folding stock and just cut the factory barrel back to 5.5".


Thinking of sending a letter to the BATFE and getting a 3.00" bull barrel on there, it should cycle fine with my silencer attached.

I have not done a 10-22 SBR. I have done a couple other SBRs.

Have you considered SBR an AR? With the different conversions, it gives a lot of flexibility.

Have you considered SBR a Glock? The conversions give you a good bit of flexibility and it is a small lightweight package.


If you opt for a 10-22 SBR, you can have multiple setups.
The folding stock setup posted above is pretty sweet.

If you go with any other these options and plan on hunting, watch your laws. It is illegal to hunt with ANY NFA item in several states.
