Hogdon HS6 is all I use for .40 S&W.

It seems to be available when others aren't.

That's a good point. How does Herco work in that regard? It is also extremely bulky, and less temperamental than BD but somewhat faster.

Like the other poster said, Titegroup doesnt meter very well and you could easiy double charge it and not see it. I like Accurate #5 and W231 over the years I've used unique and others but the #5 is great on the target and in the auto disk measurer.

For .40S&W (pretty much all weight bullets) I use power pistol as my primary and have AA#7 as backup when Power Pistol isn't on the shelf.

Power Pistol + Bullseye

I own 3 different pistol powders Unique, Power Pistol + Bullseye. All three are listed for all of the three 40 cal bullet weights that Alliant lists in their online load data. These powders are also very well suited to 9mm.

I use Red Dot, Unique, and Power Pistol. My main load is 180gr lead with Red Dot.

For light loads I like TiteGroup, HP38/W231 and WST.

For medium loads I like WSF, AutoComp or Unique (Unique doesn't meter as well)

For warm/hot loads I like Power Pistol, VV 3N38, 800x and Longshot. I haven't messed around much yet with Blue Dot.

I have never tried to overload 200 gr 40sw with Herco, so I don't know for sure. Playing with Quickload hot overloads with straight walled cases is non sense.

Looking for load data for 40 cal 165 gr TP and Unique. Needs to be pretty anemic. Wife just had to have a 40, and factory rounds are too stout to begin with for her. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I like medium burners like Silhouette, True Blue and WSF for target and range use. For getty-up-go SD loads it's though to beat Longshot.
I agree with steve with the exception of LongShot where I've seen it analyzed by QuikLoad using 180 gr. JHPs where the Max. Average Pressure was at dangerous levels. I don't think you can do better than Silhouette, True Blue or WSF except that you might want to consider 3N37 in that mix albeit a good bit more expensive. As far as defense loads, Silhouette is treated to give the lowest muzzle-flash possible. Personally, I would never use a powder faster than W231 in the .40 S&W because of its naturally fast pressure peak characteristics and powders like W231/HP38 or Ramshot ZIP would only be used for medium velocity loads at lower pressure. For full velocity loads, I wouldn't use anything faster than Unique, but my preference is to use denser and better metering spherical powders rather than extruded flake powders like Power Pistol or Blue Dot that can give enormous flash in .40 S&W. For factory level performance where loads might have a defense application, Silhouette is an easy choice.

My favorite in .40 is Longshot- I use it exclusively with 180 FMJ's.

"Favorite?"

My favorite is 3N37, both for its stellar performance, and the smell after ignition.

I have made maybe a million 40 S&W rds using Power Pistol.
I have made maybe half that amount using WAP (man I still gotta lotta WAP. Available equivalent = Ramshot Silhouette).

Did you mean "choose only one?" Power Pistol.

N320, Solo, & WSF

For cast, plated, or coated bullets, many folks in the ipsc crowd like N320 or Solo 1000. Titegroup is great for jacketed, but is poor for lead due to smoke. I really like n320, but have had great results with wsf...Illini

Re: Favorite powder for .40 S&W

I have shot a few hundred rounds with it now using TG, I am loading them with 4.5-4.6 grains under a 165 grain bullet and the accuracy has been surprising. It shoots really well.

TG meters almost perfectly for me and doesn't very more than .1 up or down. I have a single stage and just take my time. If I shoot 50-100 rounds a month I am staying fresh.

I have also double charged a case a few times just to see what it looks like. It is obvious if you are paying attention. Really I don't see the danger for someone who has attention to detail, if you don't you probably shouldn't reload.

I am still a newbie reloader but the powder is only as dangerous as the reloader is careless IMO.

No doubt this thread has made me more careful though and I thank everyone for their responses.

The double charge of titgroup ? Starting load is 4.2 for 180 gr. Bullets.
So a double charge is 8.4 the case will be 3/4 if the way full. If you miss that you are not
Paying attention. The first thing I did was double charge a case to see that it looked like next to a staring load. There is no mistake about the two. Pay attention and you will not have any problems. It meters like water out of my hornady LNL pm

Herco, Winchester 231 or HP 38, or WST all work well in mine. Rod
