I would like to find out when thw S&W Model 26 .45ACP revolver was made and how many were produced.

There were 2768 produced. I'm sorry, I can not tell you what years other than post 1950.

According to Roy Jinks' "History of Smith & Wesson", Model 26 production started in 1950, and it was dropped from the catalog in 1961. Mind you, it didn't get the model number until 1957. Until then it was simply the .45 Hand Ejector Model of 1950, Target.

Serial Numbers from S76000 - S263000.
Manufactured from 1950. Stopped in 1966.
Last model change was in 1961 (26-2).
Std 6 1/2" barrel, (rare 4" & 5" ones).
Std .45ACP, but 200 were made in .45LC in 1953. (2,768 in total)
In 1989, a special production run (40 - w/5" tapered barrels, .45LC), was made for the Georgia State Patrol.
