HS-7 burn rate
I have some Oregon trail LFN 10mm 180 gr bullets and down loaded their load data manual. They list HS-7 a lot and I was wondering, from those who used it, what powder is most comparable?
For my full throttle 10mm loads I use Long shot and I have some on hand. I guess I'm asking if long shot is similar to HS-7? Or if not, what would be similar in burn rate? |

HS-7 is a powder that has been discontinued a few years ago. Which is too bad, as it is an excellent powder that is well suited to maximum loads in 45 Colt standard pressure loadings. I have read that it is the same, identical powder as W-571; which I am strongly inclined to believe, since I have both and they look alike, meter alike and give me the exact same results in 45 Colt. AA-7 is NOT the same; being somewhat slower burning, I find it to be an acceptable substitute, though the load data is different.

Not at all. I believe W-572 is a new powder, Where as, W-571 is discontinued.

I talked to Hodgdon when they discontinued HS-7 and was told that the new powder
for that application was going to be Longshot. I did do some load workup with Longshot, and it starting showing pressure before I got to HS-7 velocities. Did get the velocity I needed out of 572---but didn't see any advantage over my current HS-6 load. |

From an old Western Powders burn rate chart (V3.4) dated 08/06/2013:
HS-7 is equivalent to Alliant Steel HS-7 is equivalent to WW571 HS-7 is equivalent to VV N-105 Another chart lists: 47. VV N350 48. HS-7 49. VV 3N38 50. Alliant Blue dot Longshot was listed at #53. |

HS-7 is not "equivalent" to W571, it IS W571 packaged as a Hodgdon powder (Hodgdon has personally never manufactured a powder). Both came out of the St. Mark's Powder Plant in Florida, and both are no longer made. Other Hodgdon powders that are repackaged Winchester (St. Mark's) powders are: HS-6 is W540 and HP-38 is W231.

I wouldn’t go with “similar” just find other load data with a different powder. Your “hotter” loads will be with slower powders to the point you can’t put enough into the case.
It’s been more than a decade since they quit selling HS-7, on my wall of powder it’s past (slower than) CFE pistol, Silhouette and 3N37 but before (faster than) blue dot, longshot and 2400. |

Thanks for the good info fellas. I think I will just try something else. It appears longshot is too slow for lead bullets in 10mm. Plus I have found it performed best when pushed near max. (more consistent velocity and very clean)
