S&W Pre model 40

I have a S&W Pre model 40 38 Special with a serial number 6946. Can someone tell me a manufacture date ?

I don't know of a list of serials for the early J frames like exist for other models. Started in 1952 and Model #s added in 1958. So yours is somewhere in there. Best I can do.

PS: My M40 #23500 shipped 1962. That's 10 years after into and yours is about 1/4 the way in serial so guessing 1954?

Serial number 5062 shipped from the factory in Nov 1954 and serial number 8014 shipped in May 1956 so 6946 would certainly fall between those dates.
