Shooting at Oregon mall

A gunman opened fire at an Oregon mall. He has been "neutralized" by police.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/12/11...t-oregon-mall/

A terrible tragedy to be sure, further compounded by occuring on what began as a grat day for the shooting community.

My old home town and I used to shop there with the wife and kid years ago. Let's not go off too much until we have details.

Oregon is a CCW state. I used to carry in that mall. But we don't need a bunch of what if's if we don't know the details yet.

Oh man.... this is rough.

Hope everyone bought whatever "evil" firearm stuff they desired... prices are headed up, don't you think?

Oh - I said - can we skip the gratituous comments?

I'll close this if we go to how there will be a new AWB or I would do this or that.

Please take the hint. Let's discuss it if we have info and not speculation.

Thank you.

The person entered the mall through a Macy's store, ran through the upper level of Macy's and opened fire near the mall food court, firing multiple shots, one right after another, with what is believed to be a black, semiautomatic rifle, according to witness reports.
This is eerily similar to the Westroads Mall shooting in Nebraska a few years back.

I can't vouch for the validity of it, but Twitter is abuzz with speculation that the shooter was wearing a Guy Fawkes mask.

That scares me on a multitude of levels.

Along with the "reporting" of an "assualt rifle" being used along with "body armor" being worn. In addition to the camoflage clothing.

We don't know - I heard a Jason match on the tube.

We will see.

people are reporting that the shooter kept saying "I am the shooter, I am the shooter" whats up with that? im guessing hes another wacko wanting to be famous. i personally think when shootings like this happen the media shouldnt release the name of the shooter.

He was shooting up the food court. There is a Century Theater attached to it.

Could possibly be a copycat?

We really don't know much but I've read the literature on these folks, so here's some points that might play out.

1. There may be some underlying mental illness.
2. The shooter may be suicidial.
3. He is making a statement with his shooting.
4. It could be revenge for a slight, a conspiratorial fantasy or some other delusion.
5. He wants to die a warrior's death rather than an isolated suicide.
6. Or he wants the arrest and subsequent ability to make a statement or enjoy the pain he inflicted.
7. He may have studied the other rampage sites like Columbine or Aurora which channeled his goals and gave him vicarious reinforcement in fantasy form as he planned his action and maybe his death. He fantasizes the aftermath. That is way most experts want us to down play the horror shots and interviews with victims. Every crying mom or dad reinforces the fantasy of the next one of these killers.

All these are just suggestions. So far we don't have a targeted attack at specific people like an Amy Bishop.

He may or may not have surfaced to some authorities. We will see, if the signs were missed or ignored.

Police said the shooter killed himself. Not shot by the law or civilian.

In regards to the body armor, I woudln't put much stock in that. Holmes ended up just wearing a Load Bearing vest but the media can't tell a glock from a squirt gun.

Yeah, in reading the coverage, it has changed between "tactical vest" and "body armor" repeatedly.

Along with the final fate of the shooter.

Just called to check on my Daughter, she pretty much lives in that mall. Sure enough the little idiot was in the pet store with one of her 7 dogs.

AND she confesses her pistol was left in the car.

I spent a lot of time last summer working with her on defensive shooting so she could leave her gun in the car.

In reality, that's a pretty high class place (Happy Valley), this was a freak incident that will probably never happen again.

Still not gonna save my daughter if I find out she left her gun in the car again.

Kraig, I'd guess this incident will be enough for her to carry it now. Reinforcing what you have been telling her all along.

I'd be thankful she's alright, and consider it a training opportunity.

is it just me, or does it seem that the trend of public shootings does not discriminate against social status?

I agree, Happy Valley is a nice neighborhood. I live in Portland and am devastated by the news.

The more of these that happen the more I'm convinced that the Anti-gunners are behind it.

But in all reality I think it was just one more nutbar to add to the list of crazies.
