have you tried a piece of leather or something similar to protect the surface of the latch and grabbing it with a pair of pliers or maybe even vise grips

You are doing what I would - I would also try penetrating oil.
I have a Mk III, somewhat similar in design. When it was new - I used a wooden dowel and a hammer to pound the bolt-stop pin out. It got loose enough to do by hand after 5 or 6 disassemblies. I recommend this forum where a lot of Mark II and Mark III experts hang out. Regards, Dave |

The manual says to first dry-fire the pistol to move the hammer to it's fired (forward) position.
Not sure if that would prevent the removal of the bolt-stop pin but I would make sure you are going by the book. Good luck, Dave |

I also have to sometimes use a punch and hammer to get the bolt stop out. One good tap usually does it.

I had the same experience with mine about three years ago. I called Ruger in Prescott and was put through to a young lady. After I explained my predicament and she got her laughing under control, she talked me through a number of steps that magically freed everything up and let me disassemble my 22/45. She then talked me through the correct reassembly process. For me, it was worth the price of the phone call. Wish I could remember her name so you could ask for her.

Don't wack it! It's probably still cocked. Or, there is something that's not in the right place. Follow the dissasembly instructions. I recall having this same problem with my MK II until I followed the directions, and the pin slid out easily.

Ruger couldn't have made the Mk more difficult to field strip if they had tried. There are enough good .22LR pistols out there that I don't see the need to deal with it--I just don't need the frustration. My brother and I have a Ruger Mk II with a TacSol PacLite upper on it and a Sightron red dot. The thing is a tack driver and usually pretty reliable. It's fun, but taking the thing apart is just too much of a PITA. When I get a .22 handgun for myself, it won't be a Ruger anything--probably a Buckmark.

Dry fire it first. Otherwise it will not come apart.

Mine was tight the first time too. I would try smacking it with a plastic mallet. I know I had to smack my receiver to get it off the frame the first time out. Also I don't think you can even open the mainspring latch if it is cocked. All you guys that say the Ruger is so hard to field strip must not have much mechanical aptitude, Read the manual and follow directions, piece of cake.

For me it wasn't the stripping down I had the problem with, it was getting it back together.

Yea it is a PITA but I notice on old well used ones that is not so much of a chore due to wear probably. And alot of rimfire owners do not clean the guns anyway till it gets a thick filling of black gunk and will not work right anymore. So they probably planned with that in mind and figured someone would take them apart only every 5000 rounds or something. Or never, in the case of some folks. Otherwise give the guy a break, it was just about the first product they designed and maybe not perfect in all regards. But in other aspects it is great. Buckmark-I was always afraid of bending that flimsy little ejector it has.

If the gun is well used it might just be a burr/wear on the pin that is holding it in. If it was me, I'd find a way to secure the frame well give it a good solid whack with a hard plastic hammer/punch. Of corse you should be sure that you are striping it correctly per the manual beforehand. Good luck.

Help me please my gun wont come apart
I had a Mark II Government Competition model. Great gun. Got rid of it because it was such a pain in the ass to clean.
