SP101 night sights.

I finally got my 2.25" sp101 back from my brother, and I'm looking to add a night sight. I replaced the grip shortly after I bought the gun, and so my only remaining complaint is I'm not a fan of the stock sight.

I have trijicons on all my autos, but have heard not so good things about the sight they make for the sp101.
I have xs sights on my rifle, and like them. I imagine the "big dot" front would be less of a change for the sp101 as it doesn't have a back sight, but I've not seen one in person.
I've also heard good things about meprolights though I've never actually had them on one of my own guns.

Anyway, I thought I'd put it out there for you guys - what's good, what should I avoid, etc.

I have the xs small dot on my 3 inch sp101. Liked it so much i got one on the wat for my 2 inch sp101. I havent seen a big dot in person, but the smaller one was great both daytime and nighttime, i decided it was a great choice for my 2 inch carry.

I wish you could get back sights also, but hey. It is a great little revolver, in fact my favorite, and i think at close range in the dark, front glow sight is better than nothing!

I out a Mepro tritium font sight on my .327 101. Easy to install; just had to remove the stock, drill out the new one and pin it in place. I still use the stock rear sight, but I'm not sure you can change that one on most SP101's.

I got mine from Midway for around $30, if I remember correctly. It's been serving me well for about 3 years now. I wouldn't hesitate to use another.

I went with the Meprolight on my SP101. No complaints yet.

Can someone post a pic? I've been wanting to change the front sight on mine but unsure of which one to go with. BTW my 2.25" SP101 is my EDC, in fact its next to me now.

I have the Mepro on my 3.06"




The pics of the Mepros don't do it justice....but of the two, I would go XS hands down.

I have XS Big Dots on my Charter Bulldog. I like the Big Dots the best of the three.

You could always paint the stock ramp white or orange/red for a few bucks in model paint, then if that doesn't improve sighting enough for you you can step up to replacing the sights.

The only time I have an issue sighting it in is when it's dark. I like the gun, and plan on starting to add it to my carry rotation, but I don't carry a gun for SD without night sights. I like them, and I don't like being limited to point shooting.

I'm now leaning towards the XS standard dot. The big dot looks great on the bulldog, but I think it might be a little too big for me. The setup you have on the 101 looks great though. I have pretty good vision, and it looks like it will give me plenty to focus on.

Is the POI about the same with it as it was with the stock sights?

My standard xs sight was about the same as the stock sight. I havent shot it enough, but if anything it raised my POI. Before if anything i was a little low, and now right on. Not 100% sure on that but it is very close

Yes on POI. I pretty much only shoot 148 gr dewc, or 158 gr lswc's through both my SP's. Basically just enough to stay proficient with them from 15 yards or less. If I want to tune in some accuracy shooting I get out one of my GP100's.

Tried red. Couldn't see it consistently.

White. It was invisible on white targets.

Put a bright orange model paint on the top half of the front sight, over the white. It is fair, but still not as good as the fiber optic sight on the 4.2" 357. Big Dot looks really nice. Thanks for the pic's DanO Those pictures are exactly what I needed to see to make up my mind. The Big Dot looks like it may be better than the fiber optic front sight. For sure in low light or the dark.

What size drill do you need to drill the new sight, Mahoo?

For a top shop for Ruger revolvers, see Gemini Customs: www.geminicustoms.com . They do great custom work on GPs SP101s etc.

I like the XS line myself. It's bright & lasts long. I do not like fiber optic sights.

From reading the install notes: will I not be able to re-use the sight pin that's in it?
I can buy one easy enough, I'd just assumed that the pin was re-usable.
My plan was to both epoxy and pin the sight in place. The benefit of a stainless gun is if I ever do need to remove the pin I can use some heat, and I'd prefer it not go anywhere in the meantime.

Ruger uses a roll pin. No reason I can think of that you can't re-use it.
