452AA in 45acp load data?
I recently picked up several lbs of discontinued Winchester 452AA that I planned to use for 45acp . I used it years ago with good results but now I can't find any load data. I tried 4.5gr behind a 185gr lead swc and it worked fine in my Colts but wouldn't reliably cycle my Sig. I'd like to bump the load up to 5-5.5gr. Anyone know what the max load is for 452AA in 45acp?

452 loads
Dave, I have no idea what the maximum load is but I have quite a bit of it behind some 200 grain LSWC ammo. 452 is (was) one of the most accurate loads for me and I hate that it went bye bye. For IPSC I used everything from 5.2 to 5.5 grains with the 200 grain lead and it worked like a charm. Nice load to shoot - very good at double taps. When I get home I will check my notes and see if I can expand on this for you.
I also used it for 230 gr. roundnose lead (quicker reloads in the 25-2 cylinder) but can't remember the load. Will forward it tonight. I have about a pound left and as soon as I run through the Bullseye that is in my Dillon 450 powder measure, I plan to use it up. I have been told that WST is comparable to 452 but I have no way to confirm this. Good shooting. John Charlotte, NC |

Dave, I have some 225 gr. round nose lead loaded with 4.3 & 4.5 grains of 452. Shot this in Major with no problems and nice control - not too much recoil at all. The LSWC loads include 5.6 grains which also shot Major.

4.5gr is a nice "powderpuff" load in my Colts but I'd like to shoot the same load in both the Colts and Sig. I'll bump up to 5.0 gr and see what happens.

While it lasted, I loaded 5.1 gr Win 452AA with a 200 gr SWC, based on data for Trap 100, which Phil Hogdon told me was the same stuff. That was their top load for a 200 grain so 5 grains and a 185 would be fine.

Which Bullet?
As I said, I used up to 5.6 grains with a 200 Gr. LSWC [/U][/B]and it was fairly "warm". You might use care in going to 5 Gr. with a 225 Lead Round Nose as I found the 4.5 made Major and was fairly "hot". Even in my old (1984) loading manuals 452 is not listed. Might try Winchester via e-mail to see what they think. A good gun is a terrible thing to waste.
