What is going on with this group

I went to the range today to work with my Remington 700P .308.

Look at this group of 13 shots and give me any ideas what you think is going on.

Temp was about 37 degrees. I cannot say the pattern is continous from left to right but it certainly is odd. I do not think I have ever seen a pattern like this and I could not do it again if I tried.

I shot the group within 10 minutes of starting. I had shot the rifle about 40 times before this particular pattern so the barrel was not clean nor was it very cold. The barrel never got hot to touch. I just do not know if this is a random pattern or not. If it is, it surely is a strange one.

I wish I could put in order the shot placement but was not paying close attention.
My bad on that.

So. . .what do you think?

I think it's just randomness at work. Do it again.

when I saw the title of your post, I thought you were about to castigate the reloading community for some unspecified transgression. Then I saw that by "group" you meant "shot group"...SHIELDS DOWN

I'm with Mr. Helms. Give it another shot PUN INTENDED

Were you thinking you were at the machine guns at the State Fair, trying to shoot the red star out?

Save the target!!!

No telling what stories you'll be able to come up with.

I doubt you'll ever see another like it.......................

Hmmph... that's the first time I ever saw a group like that. I'm guessing a combination of the earth's rotation and coreolis effect. Every time you shot, the target had moved a bit. Interesting.

Let me know if you figure it out, but it was last year & I got over it.

As the barrel warms & moves in the forearm pressure points change & the metal itself reacting to stresses under heat.

Still a good group for 13 shots in 10min though!!

TXAZ,

Funny you say that. The range master asked me if I was trying to get good enough to shoot the target out at the state fair and claim the big pink dog on the top row. . .

I suspect the colder weather has changed the fitting of the stock and barrel.

I will shoot it again next week and see what happens. My rifle really likes the 165-168 grain bullets and it is a tossup if H380 or BLC(2) works better.

Either way the rifle would do better with a better shooter behind the trigger.

I have a lot of fun with that gun.

If you'd kept shooting it would have formed a question mark (?) because it's a mystery.

So maybe 21 shots would answer the question?

My thought process on looking at your group:
Bedding? Hmmm, how would you get it to do that? Maybe, worth checking. If it passes the old "dollar bill test" then look at something else.

Load inconsistency? No, that would show scattered shot dispersion, not a line around the bullseye. And it probably would not be very noticeable at 100 yds.

Aaaaah! Cheek weld or scope issues. So, check out your cheek weld. Your group is still pretty tight, so any misalignment is slight. If all seems good, look for the scope to be the culprit.

If not, just enjoy it, you are still shooting sub-MOA.

Scorch,

The rifle is a 700P and there is quite a bit of room between the barrel and stock.

The scope is a Leupold VXIII in Warne rings and Leupold two piece base.

Nothing seems loose. I weigh every fifth charge so I do not think that is an issue.

I have heard the story that 10000 monkeys typing on 10000 typewriters for 10000 years would at some point type all of the works of Shakespeare.

I do not think there is any way to duplicate that pattern.

Tune in next week. I will be back out at the range with the same load. Maybe the temperature will cooperate.

Less than three inches?

You state you are using Game King bullets; is this a hunting load?

Looks like minute of white tail to me. Load some more and fire for effect.

check to see if your barrel is free floated when you have the forearm laying on your rest. Remington stocks are not very rigid and it may flex up to the barrel when the weight of the rifle is on the stock.
