Does the bolt catch hold back the bolt on an M4 after the last shot is fired?

When I shoot the last round with a Colt M4.

The M4 is simply a variant of the Colt M16 rifle. All of these have a bolt hold open on the last round if they are working properly. That allows you to change mags, hit the bolt release and continue to shoot without racking the charging handle. HTH
