AR can 5.56 vs 7.62 what do you lose going 7.62???

Bought a YHM .22 can now looking for something for an AR. Really like the QD models offered and I am leaning towards a 7.62 YHM can in case I want to use it on another caliber.

My question is what am I losing going to a larger than needed can???

7.62 will be heavier, but what about sound? Are the 5.56 cans that much better reducing sound or will I not be able to tell the difference? Is it worth the extra $$$$ trying to buy an multipurpose can or just stick with 5.56?

Looking at the 7.62 YHM QD can currently, but have not Shot one only demo I tried was 5.56.

You may use a 7.62 suppressor on a 5.56... most of the testing I've read or heard about, where a dB meter was used, indicate that the difference between a dedicated 5.56 and a 7.62 can on a 5.56 is 3-4 dB... which is about the same as the high to low spread that many suppressor makers advertise.

I've got a buddy (yeah, I know, a "buddy"

) that uses a 7.62 AAC Cyclone on both his FN SCAR 16 and 17... absolutely loves it.

The shop I go to (personal friends w/owners) swears that you should buy the appropriate can for the caliber. Truth be told is that I probably would not notice the 3-4db difference with my poor hearing and I'll probably get the bigger can anyways. I want a AAC762SD and an Osprey 45 so that I can use them on 7.62 and 5.56 as well as .45 and 9mm.

This isn't the same caliber conversions you're talking about, but my buddy has a .45 suppressor that he uses on a 9mm and a .22 Ruger 10/22. The 10/22 has a bull-barrel which is threaded for the .45 suppressor. Now, we're not talking about the same pressure class, but that .22 is sure quiet. Is it as quite as a dedicated .22 suppressor? The truth is, I don't know. But that I don't know should tell you it's close enough. That's .23" we're talking about there. You're only talking about .088" difference. If it were me, versatility would trump the noise increase. More important than the diameter difference would probably (I'm supposing here) be the loads you used.

I agree. Even though I dont shoot .45acp, I would like to get a .45 suppressor to use on my 9mm and eventually a .45, and a 7.62 suppressor to use on my 5.56mm and eventually a .308 and 300BLK build.
