Are these okay to shoot?

When I was last at the range I saw that there was a lot of .22 LR in the dud box, like way more than usual. I decided to pull a few out and shoot them and they all worked fine, so I figured I'd take them home and give them a look over.

My guess is somebody had a .22 that had a damaged firing pin or had been dry fired a lot, got frustrated that it was the ammo, and threw it all away.

I say that because I have about 100 rounds that look untouched. Then I have 30 that got hit once on the rim, some hit good, some barely hit, and I figure those might be good too. About 50 of them have had the bullets deformed or damaged, likely during a failure in a semi auto, so those I have put aside and will shoot in a smoothbore .410 to .22 adapter I have because accuracy is meaningless in that.

But what's got me wondering is I have 10 rounds here that have had dents put in the cases. Some of the dents are bigger than others, but I'm just wondering if these can be shot? What could happen shooting .22 with some dinged cases?

Keep in mind that I know these probably wouldn't feed in a semi auto, so all this ammo is going to go thru a revolver.

If I had seen these in the giant pile of 200 rounds of .22 I would have left them, but I didn't know what the status was of every single bullet until I looked them over.

Since I have them now, I figured I'd ask.

If they fit in the revolver cylinder without having to push them in with more than usual effort, what will happen is the round will fire, the bullet will rapidly exit the barrel and the case will probably be nicely ironed out. In other words, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot them.

Never ever shoot ammo you'd "found" unless it's a desperate scenario. If you're a reloader, take 'em apart for the components. For 22LR, just toss 'em back into the dud box.

If the chamber is actually sized properly for .22 LR, I doubt the dinged cases will chamber.

You're better off tossing them.

This was a good idea to check and see if they would go in the chamber. Turns out 2 in the picture wouldn't.

With centerfire ammo I would never shoot it because it might be one of Bubba's super hot, gun blowing reloads, but 200 rounds of .22 LR seemed like a waste to not take.

My experience matches with MalH. If they go into the chamber ok, they will shoot just fine. I wouldn't hesitate to pop them off plinking, and I doubt that after firing you'll be able to find any dent, though you might see a shadow of where it used to be.

.22LR are not hot high pressure rounds that put any serious strain on your gun and I doubt any dent that still allows the round to chamber will raise pressure to a dangerous level.

I would consider anybody trying to shoot that junk badly out of luck. I'd gladly give them a box of 22 LR shells. I hope things would turn around for him/her as to allow purchase of decent cartridges. I'd bet money those rounds were too dinged up to chamber.

My shooting partner came up with one of those promo boxes of .22 shells. These shells would not go into his rifles. He had found them on the range I took them. Later, I noticed that these shell had changed hands to the point that the printing on the box was mostly rubbed off. Wonder how long and how far that box useless shells had gone?

Add: Let OP try rounds for fit in his rifle and get back with us.

By "okay" I'm assuming you mean; "Safe to shoot ?"
I would say that they are and you will have to make your own measure. As For me, they are really not worth my time as the fun-factor is diminish. When
I shoot I do my best to make sure that all is as good as I can do.

1) I'm want ammo that I can trust without concerns.
2) I have shot ammo like this and always wonder if it's going to function.
Most have but some never did. …..
