reloading hard cast bullets

I am still reserching the reloading of hard cast in my 30-30. Does any one have some good recipes for 170 gr bullets. I haven't started reloading yet so I am manual poor.

Ok, I'll give this a shot.

Per my Lyman manual...

170gr #2 alloy 2.521 OAL

Best accuracy/results was from IMR-4227.
16.5-22gr max
1575-1959fps

Hope that helps.

Go to Leverguns.com and read some articles. I like the Oregon Trail 165gr RNFP over 26.0gr H335.

Here is some for 160 GR lead, just start low and stay 10% below max and you should be ok.

I used some 173gr lyman gas checked that I made with WW lead, loaded with 30.5gr H335. I hollow pointed them to 155gr for a friend of mines Florida pig hunt. They shot great, chronoed at exactly 2100fps (Marlin 330)and knocked the crap out of his 250lb pig. I dont know how many rounds you want to shoot at that speed, but the few I tested with 50/50 lube worked awesome. I havent played much with other lubes.

Out of curiosity, is it a Marlin with a micro-groove barrel? They're great with jacketed bullets, but finicky with cast.

Lee's Modern Reloading book shows several powders for a 170 cast bullet. Here's a few I copied.

Powder....Start Chg.....PSI...........MAX CHG....PSI
H414 23.0gr 11,600 36.0 37,800
BLC2 17.0 11,700 35.0 36,000
Varget 16.0 16,100 32.0 38,200
H4895 15.0 12,400 29.0 34,800
H335 15.0 12,600 29.0 35,900
H4198 11.0 13,000 21.0 31,500

I use a 150gr LFPGC in my Win 94 and I use trailboss for a very light plinking load and XMP5744 for more of a hunting load.
