Barrel wait times.

Along with the shortage on components, the wait times on barrels is ever increasing.

When i originally ordered my barrel from Shilen i was told 12 weeks.
I got an email yesterday stating the barrel finally shipped. At the 18 week mark.

E.R. Shaw's sight is stating 20 week wait. Up from their normal 12 weeks.

Friend whom i shoot matches with ordered a barrel in June. I forget who he uses. But was told March - June next year.

Some of the barrel makers do have some barrel blanks ready to ship.
But smiths are busy & running behind right now also.

If you have one at home, then fire up that lathe!

I got one back from Shaw recently after 8 months. Note the Shaw website includes a "Help Wanted" ad.

A lot of Smiths have had long delays for years now. Add in the COVID-related supply chain delays and it just gets worse.

I posted a new thread on this a few weeks ago to no answers. I ordered one from Carbon 6 in mid March. Heard some people tell me figure 6 months before bugging them. I believe they use McGowan blanks and then fiber-wrap them.

Mind you, I am not in a huge rush, I still have to get the smith to fit and chamber the barrel. That alone is going to take some TIME for sure.

But is 6 months a long time to wait?? Commie-COVID or not.

Delays I can live with.

No primers...the shooting stops eventually. Through this whole pandemic I've noticed that Canadian stores have ample supply of primers from the same manufacturers. Why is that?

I had a 3 month wait on a rimfire build I ordered with a Shilen barrel. Ordered late Dec '20, projected completion date at time of order was 4/1/21 (LOL) picked it up at the FFL on 7/5/21. I wasn't in a hurry, but did get tired of "waiting" on it. But it was worth it IMO. 2021 has not been much better than '20 in some aspects, but I had Christmas in July as I was able to buy 2 Savage rifles, primarily for the actions, and the RF rifle.

I also found a Shilen pre-fit for a Savage online and got it in late May '21, and just now got it put together, almost ready for the first trip to the range. Have to mount the scope and load up some "break in" rounds to see if things work out well.

OldRoper messaged me that Bugholes.com has some Kreiger SS 1:8.5 twist Varmint & heavy varmint barrels in stock. (Much appreciated, OldRoper!)
At $390, i was shocked at the affordability!
I always thought a Kreiger would be more in the $600 range.
Had they been 1:7.5 twist, i'd have jumped on one!
Thinking i may still jump on one, to have a 7mm-08 barrel for my benchrest rifle.

31" should comfortably push a 160gr Tipped MatchKing at 2,800 fps.
