Thanks for that. Its hard without not seeing the whole lower arcade. Difference between 2 and 3 year olds is the loss of deciduate 3 cusp for permanent 2 cusp on third cheek tooth. Unless its cut down (don't do), it'll be hard for me with a pic

Those back teeth are way back there. Never really noticed until I tried to take a picture of them!

My understanding is that the taxidermist won't actually use the jaws. Is that correct? Never really paid any attention to the process before. If they don't use the jaw I'll just tell them I want it back so I can get it aged eventually.

Today was the last day in deer camp for my 15 yo and I. I planned to do more typing from the condo blind we used today, but things quickly changed after we got a late start from the cabin.

Instead of a leisurely pace, once we parked the truck we quickly moved in. Legal shooting light was 0630, and it was 0610 when we left the truck. Once we got to the condo, we set everything up with the rangefinder, binoculars, and the rifles all within easy reach. Btw, I've never hunted from one of these before. Goodness! All you'd need is a micro fridge and TV to have the perfect hunting spot!

Anyway, at 0625, we get a large group of does moving into the area. Since we both took our cull bucks, we only needed 1 more doe apiece to tag out. I picked a large, mature doe and rested the DPMS on the windowsill and waited until 0630. Once kiddo called time, I took a 90 yard shot right behind the shoulder. At the shot she ran with her head down 20 yards and piled up. Postmortem showed I turned her heart into hamburger.

Since I was done, it was kiddo's turn. Within 10 minutes the herd came back out from hiding. She initially picked a doe at 100 yards, but one broke from the pack and walked right in front of the stand at 50 yards. She room the shot and the deer fell immediately. Impact was behind the facing shoulder and it exited through the offside shoulder.

Done! And it was only 0650! We took them back to camp for cleaning and began packing for the trip home.

We did run into town for dinner last night, but alas, no wifi. When we get home I will work on posting pics.

Nice rack if you are rack huntin' for sure!

Too big for me to tote a few miles on my back though...

Make sure any meat near the wound LOOKS FEELS AND SMELLS NORMAL...
Risk of bacterial infection near the sight...

The "nasty" area around the wound was small and shallow. Less than 2 inches deep and round. Everything else looks/smells/feels fine. My dad is convinced the deer was wounded last year (or earlier) also, based on a small circle of weird looking meat in the shoulder that he says is an old wound healed. I couldn't tell a thing from it but he's seen some meat in his time so I defer.

I plan on being in my blind by 3. Had 3 bucks come in this morning, And 13 Doe's. I let a large 8 walk opening morning, I regret it now. Hoping to see him again.

Well I settled into my blind just a little bit ago. The feeder just ran,and the wind is a slight breeze out of the north. Should make for a great evening hunt. Will update shortly

Congrats - Know the feeling, my biggest buck in almost 30 years just missed (someday I'll find the patience to post a pic) but of course they are all trophies when you work hard for em.

Haha. Well it ended up being a bust, I had a total of 14 deer come in. 3 bucks, Rest being does. I screwed up and didnt catch a buck that came in behind me and spooked him. He was a very tall, very wide buck with dark chocolate antlers. Well over 140 class buck. He saw me move in my blind and hooked it. Going out in the morning to try again.

Had this guy walk right to me, looked at me then turned around and walked away. Not sure how he didnt bust me.

We have a strict number we follow. With our normal doe count we take all spikes, and 8 point bucks no matter the age. In doing so the past 6 years we have a small number of 8 point bucks around. That set way for the 10 and 12 point bucks to increase in numbers. Also makes for a fantastic Rut.

This is a cull i took last year, He scored a 147 7/8 While he is a wall hanger in most peoples books. He is still an 8 point.

Here is a pic of the more common typed buck we have one are ranch.

Indeed, but it's a tough job when you control 11.8 acres.

I tried to be "LIVE from the stand!" tonight but had no signal. I was at my dads camp again. I had a very large doe almost give me a shot. They're kinda smart, them old girls, ever notice?

Very true. Im managing 719 acres. No high fence, We have an agreement with our neighbors that we will all do the same things management wise.

My wife and a buck we have been after for a while now.

This buck has eluded us for some time now. One of are neighbors has taken 3 different shots on this buck. He was one lucky feller until my wife and her 257 Roberts got ahold of him haha.
