hot shot nipples ?

I bought a couple hot shot nipples for my muzzle loader. When I clean then the cleaning wire will not o through, not even on a brand new unused one. It look like there is something partially blocking the hole. Is this the way they are or did I get a couple bad ones ?

Hold them up to a light and see how big the hole is. Some nipples have a much smaller hole to direct a very hot jet of gasses into the powder.

I put a hot shot on a muzzleloader back in the 80's. It didn't last 10 years so I went back to the original.

I can see light through it and it looks like something is in the hole

How long do you expect a nipple to last?

Rebs,
Buy yourself a set of torch cleaning pics or burs. They are not very expensive and work from the smallest until you find one that fits fairly firm. At this time, that is indicating the size of the orifice. It's really a no-brainer. ....

Just dawned on me that you might be looking at, is the entrance or opening of nipple and that is much larger than the orifice. The entrance I.D. tapers down to the orifice I.D.. ......

The theory behind the HotShots, is good but on some M/L's pretty much not active after the first few rounds. Somewhere out there I've seen an illustration of how they are suppose to function. They work fine on some and not so good on others. I still use mine ......

Be Safe !!!

I've been using hot shots for years with zero problems.

Maybe they improved them but I'll stick to the factory nipples. I know they work and last.

I don't shoot as much now as I used to but up until around 08 I shot a lot. At the very least every weekend. The rifle I was talking about I got in 1980. I sold it around 07, so yeah it burned a lot of powder.

I have a standard nipple in my rifle now and will use it til it quits working.
Between handgun, center fire rifle and muzzle loader I shoot 4 or 5 times a week. I live 15 minutes from the club I belong to.
