Nosler Partition in Mosin?

I have a sporterized Mosin with a 22" barrel(it slugs at .312) that groups fairly well , and handles great in the woods, but the bullet selection is not all that good for .312" bullets for elk hunting. All I can find locally is .311 Speer Hot-Cor which would probably be OK for a broadside lung shot, but I would prefer a little heavier and tougher bullet. I have considered ordering Barnes TSX or Woodleighs but prefer to buy from the local guys if I can.

I read a magazine article a few years ago (I can't find it anymore) that said Nosler Partitions would obturate in .312 bores but don't want to buy a whole box just to test this since I don't own any other 30 caliber rifles. Has anyone tried this?

I have not tried the Nozzlers but I solved the same lack of bullet selection by hardcasting. I use a Lee mold 155 grain for 7.62x39. I have two Lee sizers .312 and .309 so I gascheck and size according for 7.62 x 39, 7.62 X 54R. .308 and 30-06.

I use Lee tumble lube but apply it to the lands with a Q tip. I am using this bullet in all four and in my 30-06 at 2600 fps with no leading.

Bullets for 303 British, 7.7 Arisaka, and the Russian 7.62's are all about the same diameter. But, ya know, I was at the Portland gun show today, and in spite of overall higher prices these days, it wasn't hard to find a decent sporterized M1917 in 30-'06 for under $200.00. It was a heck of alot nicer than the best of the Russian milsurps there, and, you can get Nosler Partitions for it. And how about Silvertips? Just sayin',.......

What you need is the Woodleigh 215 gr Weld-Core.
It's available in .312". Optionally - .311" and .313" diameters (though these sizes are harder to find, and it is rare to find a dealer that carries more than just .312).

I run the .312s or .313s (can't remember which) in my 7.62x54R, and my brother uses them in his 7.7 Jap (he has the box... otherwise I'd know which diameter).

It looks like the .312s are about 6 months out, through Midway. I'm not sure who else carries them right now, but I have seen them at Midsouth and Natchez in the past.
