45-70 question?
Someone told me about being able to use a 3 round ball load for a 47-70. I have a 1895 Marlin. The concetp sounds sound I would just like to know if anyone has heard of this, any information or insite would be helpfull.

Never heard of that in a Lever Cartridge Gun...But in a ,45, .50, .or .54 ML rifle I have ... I have tested a Deer load in my .50 cals...one powder charge of 60gr and one patched ball atop the 1st one you place a second one. works great about an 8-10" spread at 100yards.
But I wouldn't try that in a Cartridge gun ...

There was a three-ball Guard Cartridge for the military. It was a fifty yard load, as I recall. I tried making some once for the Trapdoor. The recipe is in Spencer Wolfe's book.

MK VII Much obliged! If that was out of a old trapdoor it SHOULD be ok to try out of a modern Marlin then right?

Well, it's certainly got the strength. Whether the rifling is right for BP I don't know, but then one or two to satisfy curiosity won't hurt. I think they promised the three balls should strike in an 18" circle at 50yds.
