Well Op your best bet would be a WASR 10/63 or one of VEPRs and/or Saigas if you can find one sub $1k.

M88: Also be aware, if not already:

If the AK you buy has a tiny spring angling downwards from the left side of the safety lever, don't remove the safety lever until you are very familiar with this. *Shepherd's Hooks* can be challenging to reinstall correctly due to the tiny spaces.

Check the diagrams which depict four different shapes of hooks in a single grouping, with labels such as Chinese...Bulgarian etc.
Two of my imported AKs: the SAR-1 and AMD-65 (Hungarian matching barrel etc, by TGI) have the 'hooks' installed backwards, but these have done their job quite well. They are Not connected to the safety levers, because these "Bulgarian-style hooks" are far too short--were Not designed to connect.

If you ever decide to replace a trigger group due to unpleasant "trigger slap", you can easily install an $8.00 Retainer Plate into the grooves on both pins, instead of bothering with the shepherd's hook for reassembly. The Retainers have a third hole in the rear for the safety lever.

You can immed. Google the diagrams which depict the shapes and configurations of various AK hooks.

I personally like the Arsenal Milled SAM7 underfolder (about $1,500). I also like the milled Arsenal Bulgarian (about $1,200). I would be looking at these if you want something that might appreciate or at least hold their value.
