Need help

I finally got a start on my 1903a3 project:

After a few stubborn it finally came out:

It's the ejector. It sits in a slot in the left rear of the receiver and is held in by an unthreaded pin coming up from the bottom.

dangit jim, you beat me to it. I had the same problem with a springfield of mine. if you can't find the pin you'll probably have to buy a new one, it pretty much forces you to pick every piece of spent brass out by hand if you don't put it back in.

That pin is slotted and looks like a screw, but it is not. The slot was intended to be used during assembly to spread the head and so retain the pin. In practice this was not always done; the pin is often retained by the stock and can fall out when the stock is removed. When it does, the ejector falls out and you pick the brass out by hand, like you say.
