I measured the front sight I had taken off my M&P pro 9 and it measured 0.224 in. They were the factory night sights so not sure if that makes a difference.

Is it measured from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the blade?

The most common use of the term "sight height" is that used in ballistics software where it is the distance from the top of the front sight to the axis of the bore at the muzzle or the distance from the bore axis to the axis of the scope or other optical sight.
The other use of the term that I am aware of is the actual height of the installed widget. As I understand it, dovetail front sights are measured from the top of the horizontal dovetail bar to the top of the sight, staked in sights from where the sight meets the slide to the top of sight.

I measured the actual widget off of the gun.

There are several things that are considered to determine the correct height, too, when selecting one. The front sight is selected by how much barrel jump a pistol/revolver will have during recoil, thus different calibers, with different recoils, will have different sight heights (a weak shooters wrist can affect this also). The next, is barrel length. It's best to do exactly what was done, and measure the height of the old to get the correct new one to match the rear sight, unless someone is building a wildcat from a standard gun, then it's all up in the air on what height to use.
S&W, and I would bet several other manufacturers, ran extensive tests on these to figure out which sight to use. Now, if you run other than factory specified ammo, you may find a gun shooting lower or higher due to this also, and will need to adjust for it. Anyhow, S&W has a chart available for this, just in case. |
