Comparing a standard Mini-14 to a Tactical Mini-14 is like comparing a Granny Smith to a Gala when it comes to apples.

I can do some shooting this weekend, and let you see the results at 300 yds. if you like.

That would be a great help! I would like to buy a Ruger, if it will perform ok. I feel like it will! Have you heard of any dirt tests? (dirt in the reciever etc..) I don't think I could do that to a gun intentionally! haha. Also, I would definetely like your dealers info if you didn't mind. I just can't seem to find one under $700 at all. Thanks!

If you're obsessed with having something that goes bang every time then you need to look at AKs and their derivatives. Saigas work just fine and they're cheap.

While not the prettiest .223 on the market the new Benelli MR1 has a solid action and once shouldered feels pretty good. It also uses AR mags which is a plus. I almost purchased an MR1 last weekend, almost. Another rifle to consider isn't a .223. The CZ VZ58 is chambered in 7.62x39. It's light, well balanced and fun to shoot.

I agree i would get a Saiga before i would get a Mini-14. I like Ruger, but dollar for dollar the saiga is a better value.

If your dead set on not getting an AR, but you want to spend the $1500, look at the Benelli.

Dirt tests would compare with the M1 Garand and Springfield M1A. They're built on the same receiver. Ask any soldier who has ever fired a weapon in combat and he will tell you that he prefers the Garand Style receiver over the "Mattel M16" receiver any day. I know I did. I qualified Expert while in the Corps and carried an MK14 Mod O EBR. I loved the Garand receiver on it, and they are an animal all their own.

I would choose the Sig Sauer 556 since it will run both the SIG magazines and AR15 magazines.

Or wait for the Magpul Masada/Bushmaster ACR, if they ever actually produce this white elephant.

I am really liking the SIG556 but still have not heard of any real accuracy tests. Also, that Benelli MR-1 looks kinda "open" in the bolt area. I did notice it before but will it really cause problems with collecting dirt and jamming?

I looked in Michigan and the best I could do was $750 found it at two places at that price.

Mostly, mini 14's are just hard to find in my area.

Saw the Stainless Synthetic Ranch at $850 in two places, and a wood stocked Ranch at $719 and $739.

Ever considered the Steyr AUG??

Here in Australia we refer to it as the F88 AUSTEYR.

a FANTASTIC rifle and very accurate. Pity we are not allowed to own them here anymore!

But being a Steyr I'll bet they are not cheap.
