Your Opinion of this Rifle
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firear...=7125&return=Y
Just wondering if anyone has anything against this rifle. I'm going to probably be picking it up pretty soon, and wanted to double check and see if anyone has a problem with it. It seems pretty darn good for the price to me. Thanks. |

G'day. The most noticeable thing I have with my Ruger (.270) is how quickly the barrel heats up. It also cools down quickly. If you are expecting to need a lot of shots in a short period of time it wont be your best option. Look for one with detachable magazine.

I have a stainless M77 with a laminated stock... It doesnt shoot the smallest groups in the world.
I shoot 1.5 to 2 inch groups, while my buddy who seems to be a better shot than me has pulled off nearly MOA. Rifle shoots well enough, functions absolutely flawlessly and is not too shabby looking either. What caliber are you going to be picking it up in?

I own several Ruger rifles haven't had any problems with them. Just purchase a Hawkeye in .270 looking forward to going to the range.

I own a spitting image of the picture you posted. I have a lot of good to say, but you requested the bad. The new gray finish scratches very easily, revealing the shiny stainless beneath. Also, it does mar easily, showing knocks against tree limbs and such. All in all, good rifle, go for it. I love Ruger's M77 MKII Hawkeye.

For another couple hundred you could get this tack driver! I have had a very successful deer season with mine this year.

I have an M77 MkII in .270
The stock trigger, IMHO, sucks. If you get that gun and put a Timney trigger in it, you'll have a solid deer gun. Don't expect sub MOA match accuracy out of a Ruger rifle, though. |

I've got four 77s, two with the tang safety and two of the newer ones. One of them (the older .257 Roberts) is a true, day in and day out, sub-MOA shooter-with the factory ammunition it prefers. Another one (a newer .308) regularly flirts with one inch groups @ 100 yards. The other two aren't bad, just not stellar. Maybe I've just been lucky but I got my first one in 1975, have put hundreds of rounds through three of the four that I own and I don't believe there's a better factory bolt-action rifle on the market today.

Rugers shoot okay for most hunters. They carry well and have good balance.
People who shoot at the range a lot don't seem to buy the sporters. While the accuracy potential is okay, they're not known as tack drivers. Picher |

bryce12321,
Overall I like the Rugers. They have earned a excellent reputation over the years for safe functional performance. The M77 is CRF, has that all important to me three position safety and is made in the USA! I notice that you have selected the 300 WM version and the weight of the rifle is 7.75# sans scope. That would be a little heavy for me these days not that my old M70's don't weigh as much or more. Tell us how it shoots. |

I love my Ruger, but I did have to replace the trigger with a Timney. Trust me, after a few trips to the range you'll do the same. After that you'll love it!
Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Another pro Ruger vote here. I have 2 MKII's. Pretty much agree with most of the above posts. The factory trigger leaves some to be desired on the MKII's, not sure on the Hawkeye. It's supposed to be better. I had a 'smith do a trigger job on mine which helped considerably. Accuracy is acceptable with factory ammo, handloads will get you sub MOA.

Welcome to The Firing Line, Lawman!
I don't have an M77, but my 77/22 has the same type of non-rotating bolt. Very nice & smooth.
M77s have been known as hit-or-miss, accuracy-wise. I don't know if they've worked it out with the Hawkeye.

I bought my son a M77 MkII compact a couple years ago and I had to get a gunsmith to rework and polish the trigger a little. Now it breaks at a nice 2lbs. It can shoot MOA when I can.

I've got an older M77 in .243 and I love it. It shoots very tigh groups. The triggers on the new guns are supposed to be better than those on the older guns. I honed and polished my trigger parts and it now shoots great. I believe the new ones will be good right out of the box.
