Stoger Cougar
Beretta Cougar (8000 series) made on the same equipment, just moved to the secondary brand and the factory moved to Turkey to make room for the PX4 in the Beretta line up. |

Stoeger 8000 , they sell for $369 NIB at my LGS. Outstanding value considering they are really a Beretta Cougar with a name change. Beretta owns Stoeger. Beretta simply moved the entire Cougar factory from Italy to Turkey. Turkish labor & a business friendly country allows them to sell it at almost half the price of the Italian made one. Same exact gun, even comes with two 15 rd Beretta mags.

The obvious answer to me is to save a few more bucks and buy one just like your dads that you like already... its easier to save and buy exactly what you want than to settle on something a little cheaper, end up not really liking it, then losing money getting rid of it so that you can move on... just save and buy the right one from the start.

As a Life member of SNM-Sons of Neanderthal Man-I always recommend steel frames, in current production the Browning HP and the various CZs get my nod. An S&W M-639 or M-659 are also excellent. Firing even hot 9MM loads out of a steel frame M1911 is like firing 38 Specials out of an N-frame S&W.

I picked up my S&W SD9 VE for $300 + tax. Leaves room in your budget for ammo and accessories.

Like others have already recommended, both the Springfield Armory XD9 and the Ruger SR9 are good solid choices.

I used to be able to rattle off a bunch of guns in that range, but I don't think any of the ones mentioned by others can be found in that price range. Your best bet would be an old "holster-worn" S&W 2nd or 3rd gen auto, like the 659 or 5906.

You might be able to pick up a used CZ-75B, Glock G17/G19 or Beretta 92FS in that range, but you'll have to look really, really hard. Save up another $75 - $100 or so, and it will probably get you there.

Look around for a used Beretta 92F. They can be had for $300 to $400 OTD!

I love the Stoeger Cougar, weighs in right at $400. All metal, glass smooth slide, da/sa ... Feels a lot like the Beretta 92.

I have a Sig Sauer SP2022. I paid $399 plus tax. Perfect for what bought it for. I absolutely love it. One day I will get a Sig Sauer P229, but until I can afford that, I will carry the SP2022.

SR9 full size? You might find a cop trade-in 92fs for that. Great gun. Full size. J&G Sales has them sometimes.

I'm not saying there are not any better choices, but you can't go wrong with the Smith and Wesson SD9VE/SD40VE.
I have the SD9VE (9x19mm version) and I haven't had one issue with it even with cheap ammo. Accuracy isn't amazing out of the 4-inch barrel and the trigger is heavy to some at around 8 or 9 lbs. but I think for the price, $340-380 (in my area) is a bargain. |
