My good friend just inherited this piece and is wanting to sell it. He gave me first offer before offering it to a dealer. Can anyone tell me what year it was made and an approximate value? Thanks for any info.

For a Model 29 the serial number will have either a "S", "N" or three letter prefix followed by numbers. The numbers above are assembly numbers. The standard location is stamped on the bottom of the guns grip frame. See attached pic below.
Is it possible the "P" in the first number you gave me is actually a "N" ?

Those pics are waaaay too big. Serial number C825xxx would be 1966. Non original grips and light pitting, about $400 tops.

N 371481 = 1975/76
N 940451 = N9xxxxx ran from 1982 to 1986.
BFN 1053 = 1990

That's it! Unfortunately my copy of the Standard Catalog of S&W only goes to 2004 and that serial number is a more recent one. If you call S&W customer service they will give you the manufacture date over the phone.

I was wondering about that. It has a hole for a lock, and the keys are in the case. :-(

It appears to be unfired at least.

Thank you very much for the help!

S&W Model 29 box set

I inherited a S&W Model 29 box set with 3 barrels and trying to get info on the year and rough value. I think I found it to be 1961-ish, but haven't found any details on a similar set like this with the box. Serial # is S2080XX. See images and let me know!

Serial numbers ran from S207000 in 1961 to S219999 in 1962.
S&W did not offer "pistol packs". The barrels are something a previous owner put together. Your 29 is an earlier 4 screw model and looks like an original factory nickle finish. As for value, the gun itself is likely $1k+ (assuming one of the barrels is the original) but as a package it depends on whether someone was interested in the additional barrels and if they have actually been fitted to the frame.
One thing I'm interested in is if your 29 is stamped 29 or 29-1. Makes a big difference on value as -1's are quite scarce.

I too need help on a S&W revolver number

Last year I purchased a 44mag Mountain Gun. It shoots GREAT! Can anyone tell me when it was manufactured? The Serial number on the grip and the yoke is BDW 4707. The Yoke also has M629-2. When I looked it up I get nothing. Who can help?
My guess is '88 or '89 from what I have read on here. The gun has "Smith & Wesson" on the left side of the barrel and "44 magnum" on the right side of the barrel. Has hammer mounted firing pin and of course no lock. Stainless Steel tapered barrel.
Thanks in advance,
GRMarshal

Help With Serial Number

Hi all,
Recently purchased a Smith and Wesson Model 60. Serial number is AYN2047. I have received conflicting reports on when this gun was made. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thank you

That's because the Book is not very clear on it.

1987 – AFL, AHC, AHV, ALC, ANK, ANN, ANR, ANS, AUC, AUK, AUV, AVA, AVB, AVN, AVV, AVY, AWD, AWE, AWF, AWP, AWT, AWU, AWW, AWY, AYE, AYF, AYL, AYW

1988 – AFZ, AWP, AYC, AYE, AYM, AYR, AYU, AYY, AWD, AZA, AZH, AZJ, AZE, AZL, BAF, BAN, BAP, BAR, BAS, BBA, BBF, BBH, BBN, BBT

While AYN does not appear above it likely falls in that date range.

Recently inherited my grandfather's S&W 357 (N955220) and was hoping to get a production year on it. I did see in a previous post that N9xxxxx ran from 1982 to 1986, but wasn't sure if anyone could give a more specific year.

Thanks in advance for any help/info!

Picked recently up a Smith 442 with what looks like factory satin nickel finish, I know they were only out for a few years in the 90's
Just curious what year it was made.

Thanks!

1994.
The satin nickel finish was discontinued in 1997.

It would be a .38 Military & Police (postwar). They became the model 10 when S&W began assigning model numbers around 1957.
Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.
