I have what appears to be a model 10, 38 special, serial # 5906**. Any idea what year it was made?
It's a .38 Military & Police, which became the model 10 when S&W began assigning model numbers around 1957.
Your SN dates it to early 1930's.

S & W serial inquiry

Wow! "Right Here" is such a good answer! Here goes:

S&W 22 revolver s/n 209xx

2
74-150 on yoke
4

74150 on cylinder

pistol has adjustable sights.
cylinder rod is left hand thread.

could not find a series letter. Could it be K series, K frame 1948?

or Nframe 1924?

What do I have?

Thanks for looking, Capt billy

captbilly,

Did you take the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt.
If you look back at post number 4214 on the last page you'll see where the SN is located. Include any letter prefixes.

An adjustable sighted K frame will have a "K" prefix SN.
S&W did not offer a N frame in 22.

Late 1982.
It's a "K" frame (medium frame) 357 made in stainless steel. The blued/nickle version was called the model 19.
They are very popular guns.

.38 special

I THINK I'm posting in the right place. After spending a while on the net this seems to be the place to ask.

I was recently given a few of my great grandfather's firearms and had a question about the date on one

.38 special number 3224##

Any and all info would be great, thanks.

I need a little more info. Does it hold 5 rds. or 6, and I assume you took the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt and include any letter prefixes (such as C, D or K) if any.

laytonj1...I'm totally confused now because my grandmother died in 1979 and she had it for a few years before she died. It used to drive her brother (my great uncle) nuts because he had 50 some odd guns and couldnt shoot as perfectly as she could with that one guns....she was a perfect shot. All of that set aside....how can it be that it was made in 1982 if she had it for atleast 5 years before that?

66-2's were made from 1982 to 1986. In addition, the AAA prefix started in 1980 with AAU coming in at 1982. So, the date is correct.
However, memories do fade...

You can reverify the date by calling S&W's customer service.

Off the grip butt and the number was on the cylinder/chamber which holds six.

No letters just that number.

Okay. That makes it a .38 Military & Police 4th Change.
Serial numbers ran from 241704 in 1915 to 999999 in 1942.
Heat treating began in 1920 at SN 316xxx, so your right around 1920/21.

JNM51xx is well past the 2004 cutoff on the book. You'd have to call S&W customer service to get the DOB on it. Free over the phone for just the DOB.
CHB72xx = 2003.
BHY79xx = 1992.
C1533xx = .38 Military & Police (pre model 10). Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.
