I use the TOP (Tower of Power) from http://www.biglube.com/ It works great. Dick Dastardly is a Gentleman and very easy to work with. Seems the TOP and the one from Powder Inc. are the reigning champs around here. You will be happy with either. I can load 3 cylinder for my Remington in no time flat. Its very quick and easy. Just mount it on some form of hardwood board to give it a stable platform.

What is the best off the gun loader to a Pietta 1858
I just ordered one of the Powder Inc ones, to be delivered any day now. So no experience yet.
But forget the one Cabelas sells. Save your money. Or if you really, really want one I'll sell you mine. |

I've also got the Tower of Power. I've used the one from Powder, Inc. and I'd recommend either. And I also say don't bother with Cabela's model. About all that it's good for is to confirm that a good loader is a good thing to have.

They should, the ram on mine will raise up quite high and the base is adjustable for different size cylinders. My loader included the hardware to be able to load both remington and colt style cylinders and loading ram attachments for 36 and 44 caliber.

New to forum and picked up a SS Pietta 58 a couple weeks ago. LOVE IT! I tried the cheapy loader from Cabelas and returned it the next day...junk. I just ordered the one from Powder Inc. and an extra cylinder (stainless of course) from Cabelas. I'm using Pyrodex but hope to be able to find real BP soon. Also followed the advise from a guy to load empty 223 cases with powder charges and cap them with a 22 cases. Should make for fast reloading. Robert

I ordered one of the cheap-o loaders from S&S Firearms - as others have said - junk.
You need a loader that guarantees a straight vertical press of the bullet. Any loader that does not use a bushing to insure a vertical press is junk. Any loader that does not have adjustment provisions to move the cylinder directly under the loading ram is junk. I'm saving my pennies for a good one. Steve |

The Powder Inc. loader comes with all the pieces you need to load the Dragoon or the Remington I have. Seems to be fully adjustable and even comes with different size Center pieces to fit the larger Colt arbor holes.
My only gripe is they use allen bolts for the adjustments so I stuck a strong magnet to the base to hold the allen wrench it requires. If they used slotted or phillips screws I could use my swiss army knife. Not a big deal, certainly not a deal breaker... I guess I could just change out the screws and be happy... nah, then what would I gripe about? |

I like that idea, Tom! I'm going to scoot over to the discount kitchen store on my way home and pick one of those up!

Allen head cap screws are a lot better for a lot of use. Slotted head screws are more for tighten it once and leave it alone, i.e. cheap. Just goes to show the quality of the loader. BTW I also own one.

What is the best off the gun loader to a Pietta 1858
Well, I mentioned that my Powder Inc loader would be in any day, and it was waiting on me when I got in tonight.
It's a vast improvement over the el cheapo, and looks like I'm going to get plenty of use out of it. I have to say that both the spring and the cutting board are ideas I'm snarling for myself, too. Does anyone have both the TOP and the Powder Inc stand? How do the two compare to one another? I think we all agree they blow the doors off the cheapie. |

I forgot to mention I have a folding 8 piece Allen wrench tool set. It folds up like a pocket knife and is less than $5.00. Very handy and hard to loose. First started using them years ago when I working in construction and could never find my Allen wrench to change the saw blades on my sawzall and jig saw. Never had a problem after that.

Got to use my Powder Inc. loader today. All I can say is WOW! Made for much easier and faster loading. Complete charging of the cylinder and pop it in the gun. Can't wait to get my spare cylinder. Shot 0ver 100 rounds today without any problems. Tried different loads and it looks like my gun likes 30-35 grains of Pyrodex. Was shooting low and to the right with lower amounts but shoots closer to aim point with the 30-35 charge. Still shoots to the right about 2 inches. Next time out will try smaller loads with a filler to bring the ball up closer to the end of the cylinder. Btw I keep my primers in a small medicine bottle and pour out 6 at a time. I had two primers where the primer material came out of the cup. I put them back in and they went off fine. Just thought it was strange that they came apart. Robert

What is the best off the gun loader to a Pietta 1858
Thanks for the suggestions. I just got back from my first CAS meet where I was shooting my 58s. I wish I had an off the gun loader with me there. By the way I was wondering where to get the extra spring for the one from Powder Inc?

Yes, that is where I bought the spring. Sure makes it work a whole lot better.
