300 Winchester Mag

I just bought a Remington 700xcr. I'm having issues with shooting groups. I am using 165 grain partition and have tried 180 grain bullets. I have have tried r22, r19, 4320. Federal 165 grain shot very good at a 148 yards. Any suggestions on bullets and powder (other than buying federal 165 at $48 a box)?

You might try IMR4831 or Hodgon 4831sc. I use these w/ very good results. Oh and use magnum primers w/ this slower powder.

About That 300 Win.mag. 165 Gr Load ,,,

Some points to ponder on the 300 Win.Mag. ,,,,

My first powder of choice for the 165 gr. load would be IMR 7828 SSC . I recently was led to this powder for my Browning A-Bolt in the same calibre for 165 gr. loads after viewing many website forums looking for the same answer as you . The other dilemma I was up against and may be what is happening with you as well is this ,,, many of the 300 Mags suffer from a longer throat than the box magazine length will allow for seating bullets out far enough to get a short bullet jump to the lands . This has you seating the bullets very deep in the cases and you lose powder capacity when doing this and the long bullet jump which tends to be deterimental to accuracy . For the bullet jump problem I went to the Barnes 168 gr. TSX Match and hunting grade bullet as the manufacture states these need a .0050 min. set back to perform anyway. My first load was at 78.5 gr. and was appx 1 1/2 in at 100 yd. and I have been bumping it up .5 gr. at a time and the groups are getting smaller with the 79.5 gr. load doing a 1 in. group. I have the 80.0 grains on the drawing board now and will be posting resuts later. My max cartrige OAL is 2.360 and I am using a Lee factory crimp die with a moderately heavy crimp . Hope this may be the answer for you too.

GOOD LUCK , 10 Spot

Your issue is probably the bullet itself. The Partitions have an exposed lead base, and I feel that it gets deformed somewhat when they are fired. I have never been able to get the groups out of them that I get out of my other bullets. The base of the bullet has a greater impact on accuracy than the tip. My choice for a 165 is the Hornady Boat Tail. Shoots real nice. I used RL 22 with excellent results. You may also want to consider Retumbo. It's made for belted mags... The 300 really likes a slower burning powder.

Slow powder and magnum primers will be your friend.

Also need to check what twist your barrel is.

I have an early 50's Rem 721 that will NOT shoot anything less than 180 grain bullets. Also have been shooting a Savage target rifle in 300 Win Mag that loves anything of 175 grains or heavier bullets. So far, personal bests of 5 shot group at 700 yards is 5.2".... 6 shot group at 1000 yards is 13" (it WAS windy that day!!! )

I used to shoot the 300 Win Mag with the 165 grain Hornady Interlock flatbase. 67.5 of H414 or 67.0 of WW 760 in WW cases with CCI 200 primers. Crimp in the cannelure to keep things even when the magazine is full. DON'T use magnum primers; the SD and shot-to-shot accuracy gets hinky. Unless you go to a super slow ball powder, use regular primers; most all the extruded #s will ignite just fine with them.

I started shooting my 300WinMag in 1968. I wrung out several weights(150, 165, 180, 200, 220) and brands of bullets on many dozens of deer, elk and antelope. The best accuracy and trajectory were achieved with 200 gr bullets. The most accurate loads were with IMR 4831 at or slightly over todays max.

If I were starting over today, I would seriously look at Reumbo and IMR7828 for the 200 gr bullet.

My favorite bullet is the 200 Nosler Partition.

I use IMR-4350 with 180gr SPBT's with terriffic results. Surprisingly 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tips shoot great also, I load them ahead of IMR-4895 if I remember correctly.

H4831 SC works great too...Never tried 4895, but that would make sense on the lighter bullet, as it probably needs a faster burn rate. I sold my 300, and now the only mag I load is my 7mm...it loves 4831 SC and a 139btsp hornady, and 160 BTSP Sierra Game Kings.
