Hands down, my AR...
If I could only save two, the other would be my P226R-9 Navy... and a buttload of extra mags for both.

1st: Family heirloom M-1 Carbine (c. 1944-GI-Inland) - brought home from Guam at war's end new in crate - behind B-29 pilot's (father's) seat. Neither babied or abused: occasionally shot every year for 61 years - like a good classic car (but driven!) - but little functional or cosmetic change from new.
Close 2nd: Winchester 69A bolt (c. late 50s) .22 - learned to shoot with; still in fabulous shape (like Carbine, little change in cond. from new). Actually 2nd not that close, as great as they are can always find a Win .22 for a lot less than a nice/original GI Carbine. Last edited by gak; June 16, 2006 at 09:22 PM. Reason: addition |

if i could keep only one gun it would be my 1968 vintage s&w model 27.....you'd have a heck of a time trying to get that one from me!! of course my spousal unit would get to keep her dad's .38 DET SPL she inherited from when he was a cop here in town..............

Busgunner, you need the Dan Wesson in .445 supermag - then you'd have even more versatility than the blackhawk - and a double action!

I guess it would depend on the circumstances. What kind of situation would I be facing after that "tragedy"? If it was a Hurricane Katrina type thing and I needed to defend myself against a rioting mob, my choice would have to be My AR-15 HBAR. Few things say "you loot, we shoot" clearer than a military rifle.
If we are talking about a fire and I can only grab one gun before my house goes down in flames, I would probably probably have to grab my Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special. It is my most valuable gun and it shoots the best. It is also a hell of a lot easier to conceal than an AR-15.

My first thought was, I would rip the gunsafe off of the floor, using the adrenalin rush that allows six year olds to lift the car off of Daddy and then throw it over my shoulder and run out of the burning building.
After a mental survey of whats in there, I realized that everything in there could be replaced, with maybe the exception of a wildcatted Springfield '03, that, while nice, I wish was original. Thank God I have good insurance, because I would upgrade in most areas. Well maybe I would grab my Dan Wesson .357, for sentimental reasons. |

Only ONE Gun !!!...
How disgusting..!!! That's like choosing which child you love best or which one you'd have to sacrifice to save the rest of the family.......They are all great!!!
But if you insist.....even though i have hundreds of lever actions, my H & K 91 with retractable is very dear!!! Probably would do without food for days in favor of it...think i did anyway just to afford it!!! |

Common sense would dictate a firearm that has a ready supply of ammunition.
For me that would be a 308/7.62 NATO. I like the 30 caliber. Should have a ready supply of surplus ammo. My personal favorite 308 is a Savage model 99

It's only one gun, and it's interesting how so many posters are stating that they would take more than one gun. It's a good question, if all hell broke loose and I had to grab one gun to save, and I assume head for the hills with. If so, it'd be my Colt M4. I'd cry to leave my .30'06 behind, but I think an M4 or AR15 strike the best balance of available choices. Mine is light, so lugging it around is no problem; it can accurately engage targets, whether BG or deer, at close range to about 200m for me. Finally, there is so much .556mm ammo out there that I wouldn't have to worry after I ran out of my own small cache.
Now, I'm premising my reply that "I can only save one gun" because some type of civil/government unrest forces me to grab one and go. If that's not the case, . . . . well, . . . I'd still take my M4. . . . Just love everything about it. YMMV

The DW .445 SuperMag you mention is one I very nearly went for, but the $$$ was spent on making my new, unfired, SuperREDHAWK/.44 a little "different"! ( as usual, an apology for crappy pix at this time... ) My SuperRedhawk was refinished in contrasting matte/polished BLACK with the triggerguard/hammer left polished stainless steel...by George Roghaar of Boca Raton, FL. Shown with NAHC Life Member jacket; KA-BAR USMC knife & sheath; BIANCHI Cyclone 111 holster; Winchester Platinum tip 250-gr. .44 Rem.Mag. ammo in an HKS speedloader; and Cabela's Kangaroo skin insulated gloves.

This would be my second choice --- the OTHER .44 Magnum...
It now wears "HOGUE & TRIJICON". I like the idea of a portable .44 Magnum for 'if you only had ONE GUN'.

A Savage 99 that my dad got me for my 18th birthday. It's the exact same model of gun his dad got for him on his 18th birthday and it's the same gun I'm going to buy for my (future) son's 18th birthday =)

I've thought of this too....
...and, if it was a choice of one gun to grab it'd be my pre-ban Steyr-imported FN-FAL. I bought it new from SARCO in 1984 and have never (and will never) consider parting with it.

Busgunner, - good choices and nice guns! Sweet.
I almost hate to admit it, but after I buy the Taurus 4410 Tracker 6" as I plan to, and *IF* it shoots .45 colt well, then I'd be hard-pressed NOT to pick it as a "just one gun", as it can be used for defense/CCW, hunting large game, hunting birds, etc. No other gun can do that. Well, your super Redhawk with .44 special shotshells can, but not nearly as well for birds as with 2.5" .410 bore shotshells. Actually, it needs to be in 4 or 4.5" ideally, but still, in its 6" and 2.5" incarnations, its one of the ultimates in versatility. |
