Powders for 30.06
I would like to know what are the preferred powders those of you use for 30.06. I have a few that work for both 223/556 and 30.06 but i would like to know those specifically for 30.06, might give me better results than one that can be used for both i guess.

Either variety of 4350...I prefer the H version myself.

For use in my Garand I use IMR 4895. For hunting loads in my bolt action rifles, I use H4350.
I've read that some have great results from 4064 and Varget, but I don't have any personal experience with those powders yet. Mike |

At this point whatever I can find. I prefer imr 4064 and varget tho. I want to try win 760 and rl15 though.

I hope the link works. Good article.
Paul B. http://24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads...umber/3036381/ link doesn't work. It won't let me delete the post.

IMR 4320
With 150gr bullets in the '06, I have always had good luck with IMR 4320. A bit slower than Varget & a bit faster than 4350. Easy metering through a powder measure too.

Powders for 30.06
I've had good luck with the 165 grain bullets and IMR4064. I've got some good results with H4831 and heavier bullets.

The capacity of the 30-06 has kept me in the medium burn realm. When 52gr of 4064 under a 150 Hornady Spire put three in 5/8" and clocked 2950, I quit experimenting.

IMR4064 is my favorite powder for 30/06, it also works well in 307, 308 & 22/250, IMR4064 happens to be a clean burning powder too. William

When the '06 was "the" cartridge for high power rifle competition, 150's shot the most accurte with IMR4895. 165 to 180 grain bullets shot best with IMR4064. 190's through 220 grains performed best with IMR4350. Metered charges for all.
The above are all the accuracy ones. Slower powders than these for listed bullet weights usually shot 'em faster, but the bullets didn't land as close together on target. |

Accurate 2520 for 165 grain Cor-Lokts in my Mauser 30-06. Velocity is not tops, but accuracy is 1/2 MOA and it's death to whitetails.

IMR 4064 for 150 gr bullets.
IMR 4350 for 180 gr. bullets. 30 years of satisfaction.

H4350 under a 180 grain Nolser partition here. 55.5 grains produces 1/2 groups out of my Model 70. Really accurate, and has killed many deer for me.

I've loaded and tested 30-06 for 30 years, and I have found that IMR 4350 does what I need in three different rifles tested and four different bullet styles in each of those. Hawg Haggen is less "long winded" than I am, thus he hit it on the head.

Like many above I use IMR 4350 in my single shot and bolt guns and IMR 4064 in the Garand. I will use 4064 in the bolt guns and #1 too from time to time. 4064 works fine in a .223 but I have better choices.

Since about 1965 i have used IMR 3031 almost exclusively with bullets up to 150 grains. My best .30-06 groups are fired with that powder. |
