I just picked up a S&W 4506 with serial # TEP03xx. I am guessing it was built in the 90's. Can you give me a year that it was manufactured? Thanks for doing all of this research. 205 pages is a long thread.

Probably, your S/N is a lot closer to the beginning 72 number.

SCSW says the N800000 numbers were used 1980 - 1983. Since yours is a 29-2 it would have been made before 1982 when the 29-3 model appeared.

Too many unknowns to hazard a guess as to value, e.g. condition, barrel length, accessories (original box, papers etc.). Yours has a pinned barrel and recessed chambers ("P&R") which most shooters and collectors feel adds to value.

I suggest you do a search at some of the gun trading web sites such as www.gunsamerica.com, www.gunbroker.com, www.gunsinternational.com. This will give an idea of asking prices at least (though asking price and selling price aren't always the same!)

I was out of town visiting with my wife's Grandfather and he is asking me to research the age of a Smith and Wesson, model 10(I think) 6 shot revolver that he has. It is a double acting revolver with a laynard ring on the bottom. I found a serial number of 696xxx on the butt next to the ring, no prefix. The right side of the barrel had a stamp of .38 S & W. I believe it is either a 4" or 5" barrel. Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures.

Any information in regards to the age and value would be appreciated.

Late 1930's.
It's likely a .38/200 British Service Revolver (Model K-200). S&W made these for England a few years before and during WWII. They are chambered in 38S&W, not to be confused with the more common 38 special.

Found this old rustbucket not sur of the model, I believe the serial # is 300410 found on the grip base, 6" pinned barrel feels like the weight of a K frame, its marked 38 special

Thanks Jim. That has been my confusion in reading up on this revolver, most people have it listed as a .38 special. Thanks again.

I just got this pistol from my grandfather and found out for the first time that my grandmother's father was supposedly an FBI agent and this was his service revolver.

It's a S&W for sure, but I cannot find a model name nor really determine what caliber it is (he had .38 special rounds with it and that looks to be about right). Model Number 28684X on the bottom of the grip. As you can see its a bit of a rust bucket so I am considering having it restored, but it may just go in a case as is if I am not able to shoot it.

Most likely a .38 Military & Police 4th change. Serial number dates it to around 1920. It was made before modern heat treating so no +P ammo.

.38 Double Action 3rd Model. It is chambered for 38 S&W unless someone tried rechambering it for 38 special.
Serial numbers ran from 119001 in 1884 to 322700 in 1895.
Rather odd gun for an FBI service gun. It was an old gun when the FBI started in 1935.

Edit: After looking at it more, it actually looks more like a .32 caliber.
If that's the case, it would be a 32 Double Action 5th Model.
SN's ran fron 283000 in 1909 to 327641 in 1919.

Appreciate it Jim. I plan on taking it in to a gunsmith but really wanted to get an idea of what I have. My grandmother has no idea what he did for the FBI, she knows he went to South America at some point, so I am starting my research into that as well.

This could have just been his personal pistol, not his service weapon. My grandmother is 85 and he was with the FBI (or some other law enforcement agency) when she was a kid, so she doesn't remember much about it.

I know the best way is through the factory, but just looking for a general idea. I inherited these guns from a retired detective. The first I believe is a model 10 or M+P the SN is C456xx. The second is a snubby, that I believe is a Chief's Special the SN is 136xx. Both are 38 spl. Any help would be appreciated. Pictures are attached. Thanks again.

i just joined site a few minutes ago been reading posts for last few hours trying to find yr of manufacture on this what im guessing is a chief according to posts it is a 5 shot nickel plated snubnose square butt hard rubber grips left side of barrel has smith & wesson s&w logo on left side below square flat release latch right side of barrel has 38s&w spl plate has 3 screws and 1 screw right above plate even with hammer serial # is 26619 on square butt plate # on yoke is 93071 and has #7 under it im guessing it was made in 1956 from what ive been reading on threads and pieceing together but would like someone with more knowledge and or s&w bible to give it a whirl any help would be appreciated thanks

my pistol looks like specialized26 photo but with the black rubber grips which cover the frame and i have no knurls on ejection rod its smooth dont know if they came off or it was made that way

As above, serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951. Yours is likely 1948/49. And it is a M&P which became the Model 10 when S&W began model numbers in 1957.
The Chiefs Special is 1952.
