IMO, the 6.5 is ideal as a deer rifle but the 243 is more than adequate for deer. Since recoil is the issue, I would definitely go with the 243. The 6.5's extra power isn't really going to matter but better shot placement due to her being more comfortable with the rifle absolutely will.
