.280 Ackley Loads

Just curious if anyone is loading for the .280 AI out there. Been working up loads with IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 lately with 139g SSTs.

Interestingly enough Nosler ( who has a vested interest in the Ackleys success) has published load data that's max is way above some other data I'm able to dig up. I've pushed into the Nosler loads and am at about 2 grains under max. Zero pressure signs and I'm slightly over 3000 fps. Their published data w IMR 4831 is around 3222 at max of 60 g out of a 26" barrel. I'm running a 24 so I'm aware I'll never safely hit those numbers.

I'd be interested to hear from others what their experiences are with the .280 and if they've ran with the Nosler numbers.

While it is true that your 24" barrel won't have the velocity it could if it were 26”, that does not necessarily mean that you won't reach the published velocity they got out of their 26” barrel. It depends on a variety of factors, including chamber size, brass make, and if your barrel runs fast or slow, just to name a few.

Do you have a Nosler rifle, Nosler's chambering is somewhat different than P.O. Ackley's is. P.O. Ackleys chamber will allow the standard 280 Remington round to be safely fired in his chamber, Nosler's chamber as I understand is a tad longer. Just understand they are not the same chambering! Not all barrels are equal even one with same length.

My 280AI has not problem with Nosler data and I have 1" more barrel length so I don't have to load max loads.

If you really want to find out difference then work loads max along with bullet Nosler used and chronograph that. Nosler has 58gr/IMR-4831 @ 3115fps with their bullets.

I have a Kimber, after speaking with them they stated they are chambering based off of the SAAMI spec'd cartridge that Nosler submitted.

Since my original post I've loaded up some more loads pushing further into Noslers data... No pressure signs at all and closing in on 3100 fps.

Going to do further work tomorrow with it at the range, we'llsee how it goes.
