If you ever get the chance to try Helice, AKA ZZ Birds, try it! A lot of fun:

ZZ Birds
.
That has got to be fun ! It flies like a quail, but it's not. I found this other video about it -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L4k9R1pAyc . |

It was invented to replace shooting live box pigeons, releases are randomly controlled and if that white witness cap doesn't fall inside the ring - it is a lost bird

I like the kid with the 1100 !
I tried it, and I like it, BUT I actually did better on live pigeons. Of course that was even more expensive. I also think they glue some of those witness rings on to keep you humble. |

Of ALL the target/competition games, live pigeons, IMO, are the BEST - but as you noted, EXPENSIVE. I only did some practice birds before an event I got invited to watch - there was some serious money changing hands - and not always on the birds; those gin rummy and backgammon games had some heavy bets as well! (Definitely a game for the well-heeled).
But with the advent of certain groups, this was developed to give you as close a replication as possible |
