range report.. 500 s&w mag
Just got back from the range. I shot all my guns including my 500 mag, and im impressed with the results of my new 500. This is my first time shooting the 500 and recoil was very tolerable IMO. Ammo used was Hornady 350 grain xtp hollowpoints, distance approximately 15 yards, offhand and 20 rounds fired. This handcannon is a definate keeper!

Those are some big holes, haha! Nice gun, I've always kinda wanted one of those 500's. Is yours the 6 inch barrel?

+1 to Horace.
I shoot a .460 and I would have guessed a target at 15 yds would have caught on fire.....

I took the 460 out and never shot it before...and went straight for the 100yd target....I was surprised that it was aprox 2 ft low but the shots were closer grouped than I thought they would be...after adjusting the sight up...I got it to where I can shoot five shots from a rested position...and have them be aprox 5 or 6 inches grouped from the center...not shot on shot..but I was impressed for myself with open sights.

Sorry horace, the local range where I live only goes out about 40 yards. So its a no go with 50 or 100 yard shots. I would have to travel 1 hour to the good range for long distance shooting. Besides, I just got back into shooting last Feb and been to the range only 4 times so I need to polish up before I can accurately attempt those distances.

Love my $300, 500 S&W Handi-Rifle. Awesome destructive power. It's always the biggest hit at the range.
Reloading the straight walled brass of the 500 is a breeze and not expensive. |

I either buy my hard cast lead (22 brinnell) bullets from Montana Bullet Works or plated Ranier bullets off Midway USA.

I have good luck with the Rainier 370 gr gas checks, If I recall, I am moving them at around 1450 fps. A medium powered load, very good on the body.

my best luck with bullets has been keeping an eye out for open box sales and stuff like that, the gander mountain by me has had them on sale for up to 75% off... I currently load 500gr soft point xtp's, 350 gr hollow point xtp's, and 325gr cast bullets... set off the vibration warning on my truck alarm with the xtp's...
